Job Description
Operations Research Data Scientist UnityAI Nashville, TN 37205 About UnityAI UnityAI is an AI startup building the future of healthcare operations. With a $4M seed round from Max Ventures, Whistler Capital, Company Ventures, Nashville Capital Network, and other deeply connected supporters, we’re on a mission to empower healthcare providers with intelligent tools and transform how patient care is delivered. Why we’re hiring Our AI agents help our clients schedule their patients and staff, and we’re seeking a hands-on specialist in operations research to own the creation and operations of the optimization algorithms upon which these AIs are based. This person will create the algorithms and, as part of a larger team, be responsible for their day-to-day operations. In this role, you’ll help lead: Operations research: Apply OR techniques and methods such as constraint programming, mixed-integer programming, simulated anneal, genetic algorithms, and queueing theory to practical scenarios to deliver value to customers.
Algorithm creation:
Write code in Python to realize optimizers within the larger healthcare data platform that we have created Problem documentation and task framing: Accurately document challenges and feature requests, framing them as actionable tasks that can be addressed through traditional statistical methods, operations research approaches, machine learning, or advanced AI/deep learning techniques.
Statistical analysis and machine learning:
Utilize standard tools within the Python ecosystem and Google Cloud to perform statistical analyses and define and operate optimization algorithms.
Experimentation and evaluation:
Conduct thorough experiments and testing to evaluate and validate the performance of optimizers on tasks relevant to our objectives.
System development and maintenance:
Develop and maintain technical systems, implementing best practices within a modern development environment of containerization and pipelines. What you’ll need to be successful: We value curiosity, hustle, and the ability to drive outcomes in real-world environments.
Ideal candidates have:
Optimization & simulation tools: Working knowledge of optimization and simulation tools such as Gurobi, CPSat, SimPy, and OR-Tools.
Cloud and data technologies:
Experience with Google Cloud services, proficient in using SQL for complex data retrieval, manipulation, and management.
Programming and modeling:
Advanced proficiency in Python, specifically for data modeling and transformation. Familiarity with the Python data science stack, including libraries such as NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, and TensorFlow or PyTorch.
Containerization and pipelines:
Practical experience in using containerization technologies (e.g., Docker) and orchestrating pipelines for machine learning model deployment and maintenance (e.g., KubeFlow).
Mathematics and statistics:
Strong foundation in mathematics with a focus on operations research, linear algebra, calculus, and statistics.
Healthcare domain expertise:
Knowledge or eager willingness to learn about the healthcare industry and landscape, including the economics of healthcare, how healthcare provider sites operate on a daily basis, and healthcare data standards and regulations (e.g., HIPAA, HL7, FHIR). Additional values, skills, and mindsets include: Determined pragmatism: Optimization is finicky and healthcare data is messy, so finding solutions that work in the real world is painful and hard-won. You will need to be satisfied with working very hard to find answers that are ‘good enough’.
Extreme ownership:
We are a small and mighty team. When you find an issue that needs to be handled, your first thought should be to take ownership and get it done.
Collaboration and communication:
Because we are a small, early-stage startup, everyone needs to be contributing their maximum in the areas where their talents and ability are best suited. That means communicating eagerly and collaborating with others to achieve our goals in the most efficient way possible.
Big-picture thinking:
Everyone needs to care a lot about our broader business goals and understand how their daily work drives toward those goals.
Velocity and delivery:
You ship solutions efficiently and effectively, maintaining a balance between speed and quality.
Adaptability:
We’re in a stage of rapid experimentation and prototyping, so you will need to be comfortable with ambiguity, change, and uncertainty. Your key priority may change tomorrow; if that doesn’t excite you, this may not be the right fit.
