Job Description Tennessee State University is seeking a Research Associate for our Agricultural Sciences and
Engineering research programs.

The Research Associate will work with the team in conducting research related to forage systems (grasses and legumes) and grain production systems. The individual will report directly to the project leaders.
Primary responsibilities include, but not limited to,

  • Data Collection:

    Collect field data through various methods, such as sampling, measurements, and observations in forage crops and field crops.

  • Equipment Setup and Maintenance:

    Set up and maintain research equipment, ensuring proper functioning and accuracy.

  • Field Sampling:

    Conduct field sampling activities, which may include forage sampling, soil sampling, insect pests and pollinators sampling, or other relevant materials for analysis.

  • Experiment Implementation:

    Assist in the implementation of experiments, following
    established protocols and procedures.

  • Data Recording and Management:

    Record and manage collected data accurately in the
    field and laboratory, ensuring data integrity and compliance with research protocols.

  • Instrument Operation:

    Operate and troubleshoot scientific instruments and equipment
    used in the field.

  • Environmental Monitoring:

    Monitor environmental conditions relevant to the research,
    such as temperature, humidity, and other factors.

  • Safety Compliance:

    Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working
    environment for oneself and the research team.

  • Sample Processing:

    Process collected samples for further analysis in the laboratory,
    following established procedures.

  • Collaboration with
Researchers:

Work closely with researchers and scientists to
understand project goals and contribute to the overall success of the research.

Documentation:
  • Maintain detailed records of field activities, procedures, and any
    unexpected occurrences.
  • Field Logistics:

    Manage logistics for field expeditions, including transportation,
    accommodation, and procurement of necessary supplies.

  • Communication:

    Communicate effectively with team members, providing updates on
    field progress, challenges, and any deviations from the research plan.

  • Training:

    Train and supervise interns, students, or other team members involved in
    laboratory and fieldwork.

  • Problem-solving:

    Address and troubleshoot issues that may arise during fieldwork,
    finding practical solutions to ensure the continuity of the research.

Report Preparation:

Contribute to the preparation of reports and presentations,
summarizing field findings Minimum Qualifications M.S. in Agricultural Sciences (or closely related field), or B.S. in Agricultural Sciences (or closely related field) with commensurate experience. Candidate must provide evidence of at least one-year field experience in Agricultural Science or related field and have demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
This position primarily focuses on forage agronomy and systems, and grain production systems.
Expertise in field preparation, planting, harvesting, and fertilizer/irrigation/pesticide
application for annual forage crops (ryegrass, triticale, teff, etc) and perennial forage crops
(alfalfa, orchardgrass, timothy, tall fescue, etc.) and field crops (corn, soybean, cotton, wheat,
etc.) is required. The research associate should be familiar with insect and soil sampling. Lab
experience related to determining crop dry matter yield, and quality, insect processing/identification, and soil sample processing/analysis is a plus. Experience using
Microsoft Excel or other computer software for data collection and management purposes is
needed. Effective oral and written communication skills and good interpersonal and
