About this Job
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is responsible for managing and protecting the state’s renewable natural resources, including all wildlife and aquatic life. LDWF supports a strong work ethic in its employees and incorporates the use of good science, accurate information and technology. The Office of Fisheries exists to ensure that aquatic resources are sustainable for present and future generations of Louisiana citizens by providing access and scientific management.
This position serves as the Department’s expert and advisor regarding marine/estuarine crustacean fishery management. This position serves as the high-level advisor for the state in areas of crustacean and habitat management in conjunction with other state, federal, and local governments, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

IDEAL CANDIDATE

Knowledge and strong understanding of estuarine organisms and marine fisheries management, with emphasis on crustacean fisheries, habitat development, research, and regulations development.
Knowledge of, and experience with, marine fisheries-independent and -dependent sampling programs, including data collection, entry, and analysis.
Knowledge and strong understanding of statistical methods, statistical analysis evaluation, and fisheries research techniques.
Experience with budget and contract development, expenditure monitoring, and grant processes.
Possesses strong work ethic, initiative, attention to detail, and good interpersonal skills.
Possesses strong organizational skills, including digital file management and organization.
Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, in a team environment.
Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing, including review, preparation, and presentation of various reports to the general public, fishing industry members, and local, state, and federal government agencies.
Ability to think analytically and problem-solve.
Remains current on relative research, information and methods by routinely reviewing available scientific literature.
Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources plus six years of experience in wildlife or fisheries, forestry, or environmental science; OR
A non-thesis master’s degree in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources plus five years of the required specialized experience; OR
A master’s degree with a completed thesis or a doctorate in a biological science, marine science, environmental science, wildlife or fisheries, animal science, forestry, or natural resources plus four years of the required specialized experience.

Supplemental Qualification:

Six years of professional level experience in marine fisheries management with emphasis on crustacean fisheries, habitat development, research, and regulations development.

Coordinates with Director, Program Managers and other DCL-B positions to ensure tasks assigned to staff address all aspects of Marine Fisheries responsibilities
Works with other Sections within the Department to ensure that recommendations are properly reviewed and rules promulgated, that Department programs appropriately address needs of the fisheries, and that research needs are met
Drafts and reviews legislation and notices of intent
Presents information to the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission and Louisiana Legislature as needed
Develops and manages contracts and grants, and associated budgets, related to the Crustacean Management Program
Develops correspondence for the Department concerning crustacean biology, ecology, and management
Coordinates with the Office of Wildlife on issues related to threatened and endangered Chelonians
Administers the Office of Fisheries Crustacean Management Program, serving as the top-level expert for the state.
Provides expertise regarding crustacean management and projects that impact coastal habitat.
Designs and manages statewide marine/estuarine crustacean data collection programs, including investigations, analysis, interpretation and regulation.
Designs and directs crustacean fishery management research projects.
Represents the Department on behalf of the Governor or Secretary on federal councils, committees, and other regulatory bodies for crustacean fishery management.
Represents the Department at various meetings and public forums.
Directs the formulation of species management plans.
Advises Department regarding laws, regulations, and legislation.

You must be a Department of Wildlife and Fisheries employee with permanent status to be considered for this position.
