Job Responsibilities
The employee will work with the Office of Fisheries Management Fisheries Statistics Section. The employee will be responsible for overseeing and executing the newly funded project, “Characterizing South Carolina For-Hire Recreational Catch and Discard Composition of Reef Fish.” The employee will manage the project’s overall operations, including coordination with charter guides participating in the program, scheduling trips to observe, acting as an observer on those trips, recording data at sea, and entering those data in the appropriate database for storage. The employee will also conduct data analysis and disseminate results. Duties will include extensive outreach and communication efforts with SC constituents. The employee will work independently aboard small vessels in offshore environments in all weather. This job may require unusual hours (12+ hour days beginning before dawn), work on weekends and/or holidays, and out-of-town travel for up to two (2) nights a week. Minimum and Additional Requirements
A master’s degree in biology, chemistry or related technical area field; or a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management or related technical area and two (2) years of experience relevant to the job.
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to perform most tasks independently using significant discretion. Ability to perform assigned tasks with specific guidelines and deadlines under general supervision. Employ high levels of initiative, dependability, cooperation, and control of project activities. Ability interact and communicate effectively with the public, particularly within the commercial and recreational fishing industries. Employee should be capable of visually identifying various nearshore and offshore finfish species and comfortable working on small boats offshore in potentially adverse weather conditions. Strong communication skills, including the ability to adapt messaging strategically, along with excellent organizational, collaborative and time management skills. Proficiency in computer use and data collection. Applicant should be able to work in both an office and outdoors, with some duties occurring outside of normal working hours. Employer
