Role:
The Assistant City Manager (ACM) is a senior executive who serves as a key member of the City Manager’s leadership team and provides high-level policy, operational, and strategic support. This position is responsible for guiding assigned departments, managing cross-departmental initiatives, and advancing citywide goals in alignment with the City Council’s strategic priorities. The ACM plays a critical role in promoting a high-performing, people-centered, and equitable organizational culture. Below are a few of the major responsibilities:
Department Oversight and Strategic Alignment:
Provides leadership and oversight for assigned departments, ensuring services are aligned with organizational priorities, performance expectations, and community needs. Collaborates with department directors to develop and implement strategic plans and improvement initiatives.
Executive Policy and Operational Advising:
Serves as an executive advisor to the City Manager on major policy, operational, and administrative issues. Reviews and recommends policies, ordinances, and procedures to improve city operations and equity outcomes.
Budget and Resource Planning:
Advises on and reviews departmental operating and capital budgets, staffing plans, and resource allocation. Supports sound fiscal practices and long-term financial planning.
Cross-Departmental and Special Projects:
Leads or participates in interdepartmental initiatives and special projects assigned by the City Manager, including high-priority efforts requiring cross-functional coordination.
Community and Intergovernmental Relations:
Builds and maintains effective relationships with elected officials, employees, residents, businesses, and regional partners. Represents the City Manager’s Office at public meetings, council sessions, and community events.
Organizational Development and Culture:
Supports employee engagement, professional development, and process improvement efforts. Helps foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Legal and Compliance Collaboration:
Works closely with the City Attorney’s Office on legal and compliance matters, including ordinance development, EEOC complaints, and mediation of civil issues.
Salary Information:
Hiring Range:
$158,906 – $209,087 annually
Full Salary Range:
$158,906 – $284,358 annually

What You Bring:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, political science, or a related field
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and significant leadership experience in public sector management may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible management experience in local government or a comparable complex organization.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Public Administration (MPA), Business Administration (MBA), or related field preferred.
