If so, we’d love you to join us in the Aviation, Maritime and Borders Analysis team for these roles as a maritime economist! You will join either Maritime Environment Analysis (MEA) or Aviation and Maritime Economic Analysis (AME), two of five Grade 6-led teams within the Aviation, Maritime, and Borders Analysis (AMBA) Division. AMBA is a multi-disciplinary analytical division with around 50 team members who provide expertise on modelling, economic analysis, statistical analysis, operational research, social research and advice on appraisal and evaluation to shape strategic thinking and policy development. Maritime Environment Analysis (MEA) deliver expert analytical advice to policy professional colleagues across DfT’s Maritime Directorate, especially in Decarbonisation & Environment. Aviation and Maritime Economic Analysis (AME) deliver expert analytical advice to policy professional colleagues across DfT’s Maritime Directorate, especially in Ports and Shipping. AMBA is at the heart of DfT’s priority policy areas. Key work across the division includes: Researching and advising on market dynamics, economic growth and UK competitiveness in the aviation and maritime sectors. Shaping the mix of policies to decarbonise aviation and maritime. Modelling future demand and emissions from both modes. Developing and publishing a wide range of statistics. Team members work flexibly across team boundaries, supporting each other to deliver against the top priorities for our Directorate Group (Aviation, Maritime, and Security Group) and the Department. The two roles will both cover key areas of work in Maritime over the coming year.

Maritime Freight, Ports and Economy:
Economic growth: expanding the evidence base on the maritime sector’s role in growth and the wider economy.
Ports regulation:
advising on the economic case for and possible economic impacts of regulations for the UK ports sector.
Ports connectivity:
understanding the role of ports and shipping in the wider freight network, and contributing to cross-modal analytical work on cross-cutting freight issues.
Future technology:
researching the possible implications of automation and digitalisation in shipping and the wider maritime sector. For the role on
Maritime Environment Analysis:
Ports Decarbonisation:
Maritime is exploring options for reducing emissions from ships when they are moored in UK ports, which require the development of the economic case, analysis and impact assessment for its potential design.
Small vessels decarbonisation:
Informed by a call for evidence on small vessels, lead the development of the evidence base and analyse the potential policy options for these vessels.
Wider Maritime environment policy development:
Opportunities to be involved in other strands of this work such as implementation of the Maritime Decarbonisation Strategy (that reflect the international agreements from the International Maritime Organisation) such as a fuel standard and an economic levy, and increasing our supply side evidence on maritime electrification and fuel infrastructure For further information, please see the attached Role Profile
