This Social Research Specialist’s position is located in the Fisheries Economics Program of the License and Statistics section. The primary purpose of the position is to identify grant opportunities for social and economic data collectio n , development and implementation of survey instruments and performance of data analysis to help management make timely and informed decisions for Marine Fisheries programs and regulations. The position identifies novel social science research methodologies used in the analysis of social and economic data and performs interviews and administers surveys to collect data that are used as inputs in economic analyses. The position identifies and applies for grant opportunities, collects data, analyses data, and summarizes data for State and Federally managed species.

Key Responsibilities:

Identify grant opportunities for social and economic collection data Development and implementation of survey instruments to collect social and economic data Research new social science research methodologies used in the analysis of social and economic data Perform field interviews and administer surveys to collect data that are used as inputs in economic analyses Describe and illustrate complex data and social concepts to various audiences Conduct analyses using current social science methodologies The Division of Marine Fisheries The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) is responsible for the stewardship of the state’s marine and estuarine resources. The DMF’s jurisdiction encompasses all coastal waters and extends to 3 miles offshore. Agency policies are established by the nine-member Marine Fisheries Commission and the Secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality. North Carolina is a member of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council , the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, and the National Shellfish Sanitation Program. Management Preferences:

Experience with grant applications and management. Experience with statistical software including but not limited to Excel, R, SPSS, STATA, Python. Working knowledge of social, economic research survey design, data analytics, and report writing. Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the field assigned to the position from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
