OverviewTRC offices in the Northeast (Portland, ME, Windsor, CT, New York City, or Philadelphia) are preferred, but other TRC office locations in the lower 48 states may be considered for this position for the right candidate (including Raliegh/Cary, NC, Greenville, SC, Austin, TX, Madison, WI, Richmond, VA).This Threat Analyst will be a trusted member of a team responsible for supporting our primarily U.S.- based commercial sector and state/local government clients in assessing human-caused physical security threats and risk of action primarily from domestic groups, individuals, and others with extremist ideologies, or other motivating factors. These data and analyses will be utilized as part of TRC’s Threat and Vulnerability Assessment (TVA) methodology to identify vulnerabilities, characterize risk, and develop risk mitigation strategies for physical security events.
The successful candidate will build upon an academic and/or professional foundation of objectively collecting, analyzing, and presenting data on various demographic, socio-economic, or fringe groups and discerning indicators and trends that could suggest the targeting or supporting of attacks on select critical infrastructure. The ability to work as part of a coordinated team is critical.
ResponsibilitiesConduct security threat assessments and reach conclusion on the relative risk of a negative consequence event targeting client facilities based upon open source and limited distribution data sources for a sector, region or otherHave experience understanding different extremist ideologies and understanding their motivations, methods, and objectivesWork with the various law enforcement agencies as requiredSynthesize and analyze human-caused threat dataAuthor reports, technical memos, and other deliverablesDevelop presentations and deliver training content at client locationsInteract with a diverse set of clients including government agency personnel, public officials, business, and nonprofit staffTravel throughout the U.S. (travel estimated at 10-20% of the year), with a limited/potential opportunity for some international travelCandidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. An inquisitive tendency, as well as the interest in protecting people and facilities from harm are also important qualities.
QualificationsBachelor’s degree, preferably in International Affairs, International Relations, Homeland Security, Geospatial Intelligence, International Security or similar programs that stress a rigorous process of collecting, analyzing, and reporting on security threats and emerging challenges.
This position is an entry-level position for someone with 0-4 years of experience, so while no experience is required, but some experience (even as a Research Assistant, Intern, etc.) is preferred.
The successful candidate must be self-motivat d, with the ability to work independently (with guidance and some support).Excellent technical writing skills are required, and some public speaking experience is preferred.
Experience with reviewing and assessing data regarding threat actors such as terrorists, white nationalists, militias, hate groups, trans-national gangs, far-right and far left extremists, separatists, and other potential groups and individuals is important.
Ability to work as part of a team that assesses risk to critical infrastructure, which may include travel to client sites to meet with facility personnel, local law enforcement and intelligence/fusion centers, etc. to collect data.
