The program provides selected candidates with on-the-job training and complementary classroom instruction to help prepare them for vital positions within the City of St. Petersburg. The Academy Cadets will have the opportunity to work alongside and learn from workers in many departments throughout the city. Along with employment, participants will also learn skills including professionalism, becoming a good team member, and resume development. Cadets will rotate through four (4) departments (Parks & Recreation, Sanitation, Stormwater, Pavement, and Traffic Operations, and Water Resources) for 2-3-week periods with other cohort members. Cadets will be doing hands-on work in the field in all departments. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until we reach 75 qualified applications, at which point the recruitment will be closed.
IMPORTANT DATES
Interviews for the St. Pete Cadet positions will take place Tuesday, June 3 rd , 2025, and Wednesday, June 4 th , 2025 The start date for applicants selected for the St. Pete Cadets positions will be Monday, August 18 th , 2025. This is unskilled and limited semi-skilled manual work in various departments throughout the City including Parks and Recreation, Sanitation, Stormwater, Pavement, and Traffic Operations, and Water Resources. The Academy will be a commitment of 40 hours per week, eight hours per day, Monday through Friday. Work involves four hours of on-the-job training and four hours of instruction at Pinellas Technical College (PTC). Program participants, known as St. Pete Cadets, will work 7 a.m.
- 11 a.m. at St Petersburg’s City Hall or their assigned department then 3 p.m.
- 7 p.m. at PTC on Monday
- Thursday.
On Fridays, Cadets will report to their assigned departments at 7 a.m. and be there until 3:30 p.m. As part of the Academy, St. Pete Cadets will gain knowledge of the different functions of each assigned department and have the opportunity to apply skills learned in each department and through PTC through hands-on work under the supervision of experienced City employees. Applicants must:
Live in the corporate city limits of the City of St. Petersburg. Be able to travel between City facilities and Pinellas Technical College (Gibbs Campus) as needed for required trainings and work assignments. Be able to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing. Acknowledge this position is designated as Emergency Essential (EE) and if hired into the position, an applicant may be relieved of duty before a declared emergency and/or disaster but will be required to report for duty as soon as conditions permit (i.e. winds subside, roads are sufficiently clear for safe passage, etc.).
