MAJOR FUNCTION
Provide customer service and technical assistance to walk-in customers and customers of the Planner-on-Call Center. Respond to customer requests, verbally or in writing, providing pertinent information regarding Future Land Use (FLU) designations, Comprehensive Plan & Land Development Code policies, regulations and processes, and other planning information. Responsible for the interpretation of various Land Use Code rules, regulations, and maps for customers of Polk County and other municipal agencies.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
Provides customer service assistance in the Planner-on-Call Center. Prepare basic summary information on existing and proposed development, as well as information regarding prior development history. Conduct site visits to identify unique features which may impact the approval of development. Issue use permits as necessary and coordinates with the Building Department and Code Enforcement Division regarding land use matters. Conducts basic research for the Development Review Committee, the Planning Commission, the Land Use Hearing Officer, or any other relevant board as assigned by management. Prepares maps and coordinates with the County’s GIS Division on development projects. Participates and assists in conducting field studies and surveys related to planning projects, the County’s Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Code. Performs other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Must possess excellent customer service skills and be able to communicate orally and in writing effectively. Must be able to use personal computers, drafting equipment, and software used by assigned work unit. Must have knowledge of computer hardware and software programs which includes Microsoft Office, Internet applications, and GIS software. Must be knowledgeable of research methodologies and have the ability to perform basic research tasks. Must have the ability to prepare data for use by others. Must have the ability to learn how to read legal descriptions and interpret aerial, land use, and other related maps. Must have the ability to work on several projects or issues simultaneously and report findings in a timely manner. Must be able to work well in a team environment. Must be able to establish and maintain a good rapport with customers seeking information from the County.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate of an accredited two (2) year college or technical school with course work in drafting, engineering, cartography, public administration or political science and have a minimum of 1 year experience in Customer Service and Computer Hardware and Software knowledge. Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver’s license at the time of employment. A comparable amount of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
This position will be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.
