Job Description

Principal Planner

LOCATION

City of Griffin

DESCRIPTION

Assists with directing and implementing the city’s planning and development operations in accordance with state and municipal statues and the City’s priorities, mission, and values.

Essential duties include:

Performs the review of developers’ plans, both civil and architectural, to ensure compliance with state and city regulations
Makes recommendations to the City Planning Board and City Commission on requests for major subdivisions of land, special use permits, developments of significant impact, rezoning of land, variances, and minor and major amendments.
Ensures the efficient and timely processing of all zoning related applications.
Assists in preparing and administering annual planning grant applications; updates plans for compliance with federal, state and other applicable regulations.
Coordinates activities with other agencies related to the enhancement of the city and potential economic development opportunities.
Monitors and provides assistance to the Planning and Zoning Board and the Development Review Committee.
Responds to planning-related inquiries from the general public and other agencies and organizations.
Prepares amendments for code compliance; prepares maps and graphic presentations.
Coordinates activities with other agencies related to the request for proposals and corresponding completed plans and bids.
Provides input pertaining to neighborhood planning initiatives, sites and master plans and design guidelines.
Participates in the comprehensive planning development and revision process.
Performs fieldwork and research for both current planning and comprehensive planning.
Assists with the Nuisance Abatement Program.
Assists Building Official and Building Inspector during the plan review and building process of all renovation and new construction projects.
Assists in facilitating pre-submittal and pre-construction meetings.
Prepares and issues Certification of Completion and Certificate of Occupancy upon the verification of passed final inspections.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge of comprehensive planning, zoning, land use, historic preservation, and economic development.
Knowledge of grant writing and administration.
Knowledge of state planning laws and applicable federal regulations.
Knowledge of zoning, code regulations and the Comprehensive Plan.
Strong skills to be able to interact professionally and build good working relationships with others.
Skill conducting research and analysis of planning-related information.
Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
Skill in the preparation of clear and precise administrative reports.
Skill in oral and written communication in both private and public settings.
Ability to use a computer with proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Ability to multi-task multiple projects or issues simultaneously and meet firm deadlines.
Ability to work with confidential information.
High school diploma or GED.
Must be innovative and detail oriented.
Must have strong analytical skills to interpret research data for reports and apply mathematic techniques in practical situations.
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a Bachelor’s in Urban Planning or a related occupational field. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Minimum of two years of local government planning experience required.
Current AICP certification, preferred.
Valid State of Georgia driver’s license, acceptable driving history, and the ability to drive a vehicle as needed.
This position will represent the City in a variety of forums and will occasionally require meetings and/or special events that occur beyond standard business hours.

HOURLY RATE OF PAY

Annual salary of $64,708 with competitive benefits package and generous pension plan.
