Description:
The City of Madison is seeking a detail-oriented and highly motivated Assistant City Planner to support the Planning and Zoning/Community Development Department. This position will provide administrative and technical assistance, including secretarial duties, while also performing professional planning work related to Geographic Information Systems (GIS), site plan review, and preliminary plat evaluations. Key Responsibilities Assist the Director of Planning and Zoning/Community Development with administrative tasks, including scheduling, correspondence, and record-keeping. Utilize GIS software to create, update, and analyze spatial data for planning and zoning purposes. Review site plans and preliminary plats for compliance with city zoning ordinances, subdivision regulations, and land use policies. Provide support for Planning and Zoning Commission meetings, including preparing agendas, compiling reports, and recording meeting minutes. Maintain and update planning databases, maps, and departmental records. Communicate with developers, engineers, and the public regarding zoning regulations, development applications, and planning procedures. Assist in research and preparation of planning reports, maps, and presentations for city officials. Perform other duties as assigned to support the goals of the department.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
A bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, City Planning, Regional Planning, Geography, Public Administration, or a related field is preferred. Experience in municipal planning, GIS mapping, site plan review, and landscape architecture is highly desirable. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Skills and Knowledge:
Proficiency in GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar). Strong understanding of zoning regulations, land use planning, and development review processes. Excellent organizational and administrative skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint). Ability to read and interpret site plans, maps, and plats . Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work with city officials, developers, and the public. Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
