Planners perform intermediate professional and administrative work assisting with and implementing a variety of urban and/or long range planning activities; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Planning Administrator or their designee. The job selection process allows for the selection of a candidate at either the Planner 1 or Senior Planner position based on their experience and education. This is an excellent opportunity for Planners at a variety of levels to build their skill set, take on increasing responsibilities, and progress upward as a Planner, while working in a dynamic and collaborative environment. Essential Functions/Typical Tasks Assists with the coordination and preparation of planning activities, reviewing permits, plats and site plans; ensuring compliance with ordinances, statutes and regulations; conducts research; maintaining records and files; preparing reports. Reviews development and related land use permit applications, site plans, subdivision plats, etc. Examines applications for compliance with established plans and ordinances, and applicable local, state or federal regulation. Gathers, assimilates, interprets and analyzes a variety of data, requests and information pertaining to planning and zoning operations. Assists with professional and administrative support to Planning Board, Board of Adjustments and City Council as required. Receives, researches and processes zoning questions, requests and appeals. Assists the public with applications and inquiries. Prepares, issues and performs field inspections for items associated with permits. Performs related tasks as required. Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in urban planning, engineering, public administration or a related field and 6 months to 2 years of professional experience in urban or transportation planning and/or community development activities. Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge of the principles and practices of transportation, urban and/or long range planning; general knowledge of zoning and code enforcement practices; ability to provide professional staff to public bodies; ability to read and interpret blueprints, site development plans, engineered drawings and architectural designs; ability to gather and interpret technical and statistical information and prepare technical reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials and to the general public.
