We are seeking a full-time Distinguished Scientist, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, who will support the Cyber Resilience and Intelligence Division (CRID) in the National Security Sciences Directorate (NSSD) at

ORNL. CRID

provides new methods, tools, and strategies to detect and mitigate adversarial attacks on critical infrastructure and protections and informs national agencies about the nature, extent, and severity of adversarial actions with the goal of improving the US cyber and physical security posture.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Initiate, lead and perform independent and impactful artificial intelligence (AI),machine learning (ML), and data science research on an ongoing basis as evidenced by, for example, innovative science and technology (S&T) delivered to sponsors, successful proposals, S&T presentations, professional community engagement, inventions/patents/copyrights, publications as appropriate, etc. Develop a vision and implement a cohesive research strategy to ensure the success of new and ongoing research projects related to AI and ML science and technology. Provide technical insights for program and project development. Lead teams to define and implement sponsor requirements. Mentor early-career staff through both formal project, task, and technical leadership. Perform research & development at levels ranging from proof-of-concept development to software / system architecture. Basic Qualifications:

Ph.D. in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field and 12 years’ experience in government service or private industry. Research experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science and analytics. Experience leading cross-functional research teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience leading teams and performing research in artificial intelligence / machine learning, specifically for cybersecurity, signal processing, biometrics, digital forensics, and/or computer vision for national security applications.
