With Direct Reporting to the Manulife Group Level CIO, and matrix reporting to CEO of John Hancock Financial, this role leads technology delivery for the John Hancock Life Insurance, Variable Benefits, and Annuities businesses. The leader will be an integral member of the John Hancock leadership team and accelerate the transformation to a digital leading, customer-obsessed organization through the deployment of technology capabilities that help drive competitive differentiation for our franchise. The role will also sit as a critical member of our Global Technology team and deliver on our differentiated technology value proposition internally and externally.
Position Responsibilities:
We’re looking for an Insurance industry technology leader who demonstrates a focus on exceptional change, and measurable results. A collaborative, transparent leader who can communicate an enterprise vision, tied to business strategy, and engage individuals to work towards objectives. This role requires high visibility and collaboration across the company, leveraging relationships and expertise to build trust, credibility, and successful partnerships within the Senior Leadership Team of peers.
The role will:
Drive Strategic Innovation:
Lead the development and execution of a technology roadmap that aligns with current and emerging market trends in Insurance.
Accelerate Digital Transformation:
Champion agile, DevOps, and CI/CD practices to modernize legacy systems and deliver seamless, customer-first digital experiences.
Enhance Business Differentiation:
Leverage deep industry knowledge to create technology solutions that further our ambitions in behavioral insurance (e.g., Vitality, Grail), reinforcing our leadership position in personalized insurance solutions.
Strengthen Engineering Excellence:
Oversee in-house engineering teams and cultivate a high-performance culture focused on delivery, innovation, and resilience.
Monitor Market & Tech Ecosystems:
Stay ahead of insurtech, fintech, and digital health trends to inform strategy and identify partnership or acquisition opportunities.
Executive Collaboration:
Serve as a trusted advisor and industry expert to the Global CIO and U.S. business CEO, contributing to enterprise-wide innovation and transformation.
Talent Magnet:
Attract, develop, and retain top-tier technology talent across geographies, fostering a diverse and inclusive leadership pipeline.
Customer-Centric Design:
Partner with creative and business leaders to digitize the full customer journey across life insurance, long-term care, and annuities.
Team Leadership:
Lead a mixed team of ~1,500 FTE and Contractors with a $200M+ budget.
Required Qualifications:
15+ years of progressive technology leadership, within the insurance and financial services industries. Proven success leading digital transformation in complex, matrixed organizations. Deep understanding of Insurance as an industry, market dynamics, regulatory environments, and customer behavior trends. Demonstrated ability to translate our business goals as a top Insurer into scalable, tech-enabled solutions. Strong financial acumen with experience managing large budgets and evaluating technology investments through a business lens. Expertise in emerging technologies, including AI, cloud, data platforms, and digital engagement tools. The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training.
