General Description
Under general supervision, performs a variety of support and maintenance functions in areas of computer network, telephone system, security alarm, access control and electronic equipment and systems used in the City operations. Employees in this classification provide skilled technical support to assigned personnel and end users network systems, and are responsible for managing various file servers daily operations. Essential Job Functions
This is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks. Maintains and supports computer workstations, desktop and laptop computers running a variety of operating systems as may be used at the City. Primary activities are in support of Microsoft network and desktop operating systems. Plans and documents installation and related strategic initiatives criteria; presents such to management as required.
Reviews user requests for hardware, software and peripheral components to ensure that the requests are compatible with the users’ needs and City’s standards. Manages and coordinates installation for new hardware, software, servers, and upgrades for various districts and departments utilizing stand alone, on-line, and/or remote environment systems.
Performs systems security updates for all network servers, to include software applications, user files and user accounts.
Assists in network capacity planning for both short and long-term agency objectives.
Measures system performance and recommends modifications to achieve optimal utilization of the available system hardware and software resources.
Coordinates services with software vendors and representatives for the purpose of configuring and modifying system environments regarding implementation of specialized software packages.
Writes and maintains records, reports, and documents on system and software specifications and configuration.
Reviews and evaluates equipment maintenance and repair reports; maintains files of all unit records and documentation.
Researches product availability and pricing for the purpose of providing recommendations concerning systems for the agency.
Performs other related duties, as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of current principles and practices of computer systems technology. Knowledge of PC hardware and software systems. Knowledge of computer hardware and software functionality, including specific experience working within a Microsoft Windows based LAN environment. Knowledge of PC and file server operating system components. Knowledge of local and wide area networking. Knowledge of current hardware and software research and trends in the computer industry. Skilled in maintaining and troubleshooting computer operating systems. Ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and/or analyze data and/or information. Includes exercising discretion in determining data classification, and in referencing such analysis to established standards for the purpose of recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships.
Ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference data and information. Ability to make discretionary decisions pertaining to confidential matters and confidential documents. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Skill in the use of personal computer with keyboard, including the use of software packages to include Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, CJIS, OSSI, EDEN, FCIC, NCIC, Internet and public databases; typewriter; calculator; radios, motor vehicle, copier; facsimile machine, and telephone.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field; supplemented by three (3) years of desktop support experience. Network+ and A+ certification preferred. Experience with GIS, EDEN, OSSI, or any public safety experience is a plus. Applicants qualifying for employment will be subject to a polygraph examination and an extensive background screening. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and satisfactory driving history throughout employment. A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be considered.
