Job Summary:
Responsible for hiring and maintaining a proficient, skilled Lab Support Services team. Will coordinate Lab Support Services duties which may include hard sticks for the designated areas of the hospital. Maintains customer service for the department, which includes patient rounding.
Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
SCHEDULE LAB SUPPORT SERVICES SPECIALISTS
- Provide coverage to designated areas at designated times for patient collection
- Maintain a schedule that can accommodate absences, minimize overtime and still maintain collections.
- Hire qualified staff and keep turn over rates down by having adequately skilled staff to cover draws.
- Maintain a fair schedule for PTO / Holidays
- Maintain accurate timekeeping for the department
CUSTOMER SERVICE
- Maintain a working relationship with nursing and physicians to provide for the needs of the hospital.
- Assures all Lab Support Services Specialists trained and competent in Customer Service Skills including bedside manner and telephone etiquette.
- Quickly address any customer issues that arise.
- Round on patients three times a week with a combined minimum of eight patients for each rounding
- schedule on the nursing units.
TECHNICAL SKILLS
- Maintains a regular daily unit assignment.
- Train all new Lab Support Services Specialists in correct procedures.
- Document competency by written testing and direct observation of all Lab Support Services Specialists annually.
- Assures all Lab Support Services Specialists skilled at collecting pediatrics and babies.
- Promote Professional Certification for all applicable Lab Support Services Specialists.
- Assisting with am collections and routine labs
- Train Lab Support Services Specialists in computer skills to generate Collection lists, unreceived specimen logs and to verify patient orders.
SUPERVISORY FUNCTIONS
- Maintains a daily regular unit assignment.
- Supports ER Lab Support Services Specialists in collections/receiving
- Rounds daily on units with nursing staff
- Attends assigned Lab Leadership meetings
- Attends regular leadership training as assigned
- Participates in regularly scheduled Staff meetings for Lab Support Services team
- Promotes a positive/productive work atmosphere
- Assists in annual and mid term performance appraisals for all team members.
- Administers employee counseling as required by Wellstar policies.
- Maintains department readiness for CAP and JCAHO inspeactions.
Performs other duties as assigned Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Required Minimum Education:
High school diploma Required or equivalent Required Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s): All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated. Basic Life Support or BLS – Instructor-Preferred Additional License(s) and Certification(s):
Required Minimum Experience:
Minimum 5 years phlebotomy experience Preferred and Minimum 2 years supervisory experience
