SCHOOL COMPUTER TECH
Major Functions:
Overseeing the daily operations of computers, networks, printers, applications and Internet connections in schools assigned. Installation of new equipment. Repair or making arrangements for repair of existing equipment. Ability to work independently. Located at one school and responsible for four to six schools, depending on the individual tech’s ability and the size of the school location.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- School networks. The computer tech is responsible for maintaining the computer network at the schools he/she is assigned. This includes the cable, fiber, WiFi access points, servers, network switches, workstations, printers, and any other hardware attached to the school’s network.
- Installation of new equipment. Installing and configuring any desktop computer, WiFi equipment, portable device, printers and file servers needed in the school.
- Application installation. Applications are primarily “pushed” out to the workstations via Windows Server group policies. The computer tech is responsible for configuring the group policies on the school server and seeing to it that the software/applications are installed onto the workstations and functioning as needed.
- User Setup. All users on the school servers should be created and assigned permissions by the computer tech. User groups and users are part of the school’s “active directory” running on the primary school server. Users and groups are assigned permissions based on their needs and application.
- Troubleshooting. Repairing hardware issues when possible, interfacing with vendors to repair “in-warranty” issues, and determining problems with installation of applications. User issues within the schools are typically procedural problems so the tech is responsible for showing the end users what to do in order to prevent future problems.
- Printer configuration and assignment. Each desktop computer and/or user is assigned one or more printers or copiers.
- Escalating Issues up the chain of command.
During the course of a day rare and sometimes unique issues will arise on a school network. The computer tech is the first person to attempt to solve these problems as they occur. Should the computer tech be unable to find the solution he/she is responsible for pushing the issue up to the Chief Technology Officer, Junior Technology Officer, or a more senior tech who has more experience in solving the problem. The computer tech should remain involved in the solution in order to learn how to address the problem should it arise again.
- Learning New Technology. As new equipment and applications enter the schools, the computer tech is responsible for learning how to configure, repair and administer the new technology. Learning is sometimes done in a class setting or a Technology Department meeting. Typically new information can be gained by using the Internet to search for instructions and solutions.
- Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the supervisor or superintendent.
- Adhere to the Mississippi Code of Ethics.
- Maintain confidentiality and privacy of all Desoto County Schools’ records.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in computer technology preferred but experience in field will be considered in place of. Have a strong background in computer technology and a desire to learn as new technology comes into the schools. Must be a quick learner and self-starter. Working independently the majority of the time requires them to understand how to prioritize and schedule their work in order to accomplish their daily tasks.
