Duties Description

  • This position resides on the Enterprise Server Services (ESS) team within the bureau of Hardware Platforms within the Chief Information Office.
  • Install, configure, and support enterprise operating systems including but not limited to UNIX, Linux, IBM z/OS and IBM AS/400, running on x86, IBM pSeries and zSeries hardware platforms.
  • Install, configure, and support third-party server infrastructure software.
  • Assist in the development of, and support the adherence to, all ESS technical procedures.
  • Monitor and respond to support tickets in a timely manner.
  • Create and manage shell scripts for automated tasks.
  • Provide non-business hours support including scheduled maintenance outages, rotating on-call roster, and emergency production outages.
  • Create, monitor, and/or review reports each day for server status, escalating to the supervisor or manager when appropriate.
  • Monitor resource utilization of servers running on x86, IBM pSeries, and IBM zSeries hardware platforms.
  • Apply upgrades, patches and resolve security vulnerabilities on regularly scheduled intervals.
  • Provide professional support when interfacing with team members, customers, vendors, and other technical teams.
  • Research and plan the maintenance process according to installation guidelines, communicating outage information to impacted customers.
  • Collaborate with coworkers and other Chief Information Office (CIO) units to troubleshoot problems.
  • Create and maintain documentation including infrastructure diagrams, troubleshooting articles, and upgrade plans.
  • Develop and maintain recovery procedures.

NYHELPS Program:

For an appointment to an Information Technology Specialist 2, you must have: 1. A bachelor’s or higher-level degree in any field and one year of experience in information technology. OR2. A bachelor’s or higher-level degree, including or supplemented by 15 credit hours in computer science courses.

OR3. 60 semester credit hours including or supplemented by 15 semester credit hours in computer science and one year of professional experience in information technology.

OR4. A total of two years of experience in information technology.

Competitive Minimum Qualifications:

You must be currently reachable on the appropriate eligible list for this title, eligible under the 55 b/c program, or eligible to transfer to this title under Section 52.6, 70.1, or 70.4 of the Civil Service Law.

Transfer:

For 52.6, 70.1, or 70.4 transfer to an Information Technology Specialist 2, salary grade (SG)-18, you must have one year of permanent competitive, or 55-b/55-c service in an approved title for transfer allocated to an SG-16 or above.

Additional Comments Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience with Operating Systems including but not limited to UNIX, Linux, IBM z/OS, and/or AS/400.
  • A degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Telecommunications, Management Information Systems, or Computer Engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience with Shell Scripting.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting ability.
  • Ability to demonstrate task ownership and complete assignments from start to finish.
  • Ability to effectively work in a demanding environment with multiple priorities and customers.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Telecommuting:

The Office of the New York State Comptroller (OSC) supports telecommuting where it is reasonable to do so based upon the agency’s mission and operational needs. Generally, employees new to OSC will be restricted from telecommuting for at least 8 calendar weeks. After the initial 8 calendar week restriction, if an employee’s primary residence location, duties, and work performance are aligned with telecommuting and operational needs they may be allowed to do so. Generally, OSC employees may telecommute up to 5 days per pay period but may be approved to telecommute less.
