Your Role:

In this role you will be the Sr Systems Engineer within the SLS-Biology R D Engineering team. You will play a crucial role in the design, development, and optimization of innovative automation products for our Biology franchise. You will lead the design and development of automation solutions tailored for the laboratory market. Your primary focus will be creating automated devices and instrumentation that facilitate sample preparation for imaging or multi-mode detection technologies. Create and prototype instrument and device concepts using CAD software. Perform comprehensive evaluations, troubleshooting and validations during the development process for instrumentation and devices to ensure system performance. Transition the product from R D into manufacturing and provide mfg and quality support as needed post launch. Meticulously document all experimental and engineering protocols and results; prepare detailed technical reports and presentations for diverse audiences. Monitor emerging trends and technologies in automation, applying this knowledge to foster innovation within the team. Systems Integration (Hardware-Software Coordination): Designing and integrating software with sensors, actuators, robotics, and instruments.

Automation Control Software Development:

Writing control logic for instrument automation (e.g., in C++, Python, LabVIEW, C#).

Device Communication Protocols:

Implementing and troubleshooting protocols like RS-232, Ethernet/IP, Modbus, USB, CAN, and proprietary lab instrument communications.

Test Automation and Validation Development:

Creating automated tests to validate both hardware and software functions across complex systems. Troubleshooting and Root Cause Analysis (Systems-Level): Diagnosing and resolving multi-component system failures (hardware, software, firmware interactions).

Motion Control and Robotics Knowledge:

Integrating and controlling motors, actuators, stages, and robotic subassemblies precisely.

Understanding of Electrical/Mechanical Interfaces:

Working knowledge of wiring, sensors, pneumatics, mechanical tolerances to build fully functional systems.

Who You Are Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other Systems Engineering Discipline. 5+ years of experience in an engineering role.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical, Automation, or Systems Engineering. 7+ years in automation or instrument engineering. Experience with various engineering disciplines. Experience with 3D/2D design software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks). Strong experience in prototyping and machining techniques (e.g., CAD, 3D printing, CNC milling, drilling, molding, etc.) related to laboratory instruments. Hands-on experience with laboratory automation equipment Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities. Software skills; Python, C, C++, a plus Experience with instrumentation in the Life Science Biology area like; Cell Imaging, Assay detection, Proteomics, Western Blotting technologies a plus What we offer: We are curious minds that come from a broad range of backgrounds, perspectives, and life experiences.
