Description of Work This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits , competitive salaries and many career development opportunities. The Regional Systems Engineer is responsible for the installation, maintenance and operation of all ITS devices on the interstates and freeways within the ERTMC coverage area. Engineer shall send/respond to email, answer phone calls, review plans for ITS devices and fiber communication and collaborate with traffic engineers, field technicians and government stakeholders to support system integration, testing, and commissioning of ITS projects. Engineer shall maintain records and reports on all work done. Engineer shall have the knowledge and ability to interpret/review ITS and communications plans, traffic control plans and other plan types as needed. Engineer shall receive requests/complaints from the general public, contractors and other departments. Engineer must have the ability and knowledge to investigate the complaints and suggest/implement corrective actions. Many decisions can reflect the dangers/safety of the traveling public. Engineer will be responsible for assisting the Regional ITS Engineer in maintaining the ERTMC facilities. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following: Experience in the implementation of ITS, traffic management techniques, and highway construction Experience working to diagnose and troubleshoot electrical and communication systems failures and initiating repairs Experience applying Local Area Network configuration and operation concepts to solve complex problems Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision Computer experience (such as Microsoft office, Outlook, and use of GIS software)

Additional Expectations:

Candidate must have the ability to oversee employees and interpret/apply personnel policies. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with the general public, contractors, other governmental agency personnel, and employees. Physical activities require standing, walking, talking, seeing and hearing. The candidate must have the ability to give and follow both oral and written instructions. This position will be exposed to extreme cold and hot outside conditions, high volumes of traffic, and heavy construction equipment. Must comply with all safety rules and policies to maintain a safe work environment. Safety toe shoes are required for this position. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
