OBJECTIVE

SyntheticMolecule Process Development (SMPD) is responsible for developingrobust, cost-effective processes for new small-moleculepharmaceuticals, including methods to achieve and control highstandards of crystal form, particle size distribution (PSD), andproduct quality. The Senior Staff Engineer

  • Crystallization &Particle Engineering (Modeling) will join a dynamic and innovativeteam of engineers and scientists within SMPD’s Process Engineering& Technology Group.

The successful candidate will have a strongbackground in crystallization process development and populationbalance modeling (PBM). They will lead and tackle challengingproblems in particle engineering by leveraging expertise incrystallization kinetics, mass/heat transfer, mathematicalmodeling, and crystallization design. Additionally, the SeniorStaff Engineer will establish scale-up and scale-down models forcrystallization operations, using both first-principle anddata-driven approaches. The role includes the application ofprocess analytical technologies (PAT) combined with mathematicalmodels (both statistical and first principle) to enhance processunderstanding. This in turn will enable effective development, optimization, scale-up, and troubleshooting of crystallizationprocesses using in-silico approaches.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Leads andcontributes to the design, development, optimization, and scale-upof crystallization processes for synthetic molecule drugsubstances, leveraging advanced modeling, simulation, andpopulation balance modeling approaches. Develops, implements, andvalidates predictive crystallization models (mechanistic,data-based or hybrid) to predict and control particle sizedistribution, morphology, purity, and polymorphic form. Designs andexecutes experimental workflows, integrating in-line and off-lineprocess analytical technologies (PAT), for data-rich modeldevelopment and verification. Collaborates cross-functionally withAutomation, Manufacturing, Process Engineering, and analyticalexperts to develop and deploy digital twins for crystallization andparticle engineering processes. Drives adoption of an “in-silicofirst” approach, recommending, justifying, and implementing robustcrystallization modeling tools and workflows across theorganization. Provides expert technical leadership within thecrystallization modeling domain, influencing strategic directionand independently resolving complex technical issues throughpredictive modeling. Reviews, interprets, and communicates modelingoutcomes and experimental data to multidisciplinary teams andstakeholders to support informed decision-making and processimprovements. Authors technical reports, validation documents, regulatory filings, and peer-reviewed manuscripts related tocrystallization modeling and particle engineering methodologies.

Maintains awareness of emerging trends and tools in crystallizationmodeling, proactively identifies relevant vendor solutions, andactively participates in academic and industry collaborations toadvance modeling capabilities. Champions knowledge-sharing anddemocratization of crystallization modeling and simulationmethodologies, providing training and guidance to support broadertechnical capability building across the department and globalorganization.
