OBJECTIVE
SyntheticMolecule Process Development (SMPD) is responsible for thedevelopment of robust and cost-effective processes for themanufacture of new small molecule pharmaceuticals, along withmethods for achieving and controlling high standards of purity andquality. The Staff Engineer
- Process Modeling will join a dynamicand innovative team of engineers and scientists within SMPD’sProcess Engineering & Technology Group.
The successful candidatewill have a strong background in chemical reaction engineering andwill tackle challenging problems in chemical reactions byleveraging expertise in reaction kinetics, transport phenomena,mathematical modeling, and reactor design. Additionally, the StaffEngineer will be involved in developing scale-up and scale-downmodels for studying unit operations using both first principle anddata-based models. The role includes the application of processanalytical technologies (PAT) in combination with mathematicalmodels (both mechanistic and statistical) to enhance processunderstanding and enable data-rich experimentation. Theseapproaches will drive the design, optimization, scale-up, andtroubleshooting of synthesis processes, ensuring robustpharmaceutical manufacturing through digital and in-silicomethodologies.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
Contributes to the design,development, optimization, and scale-up of manufacturing processesfor synthetic molecule drug substances using process modeling andsimulation principles. Utilizes advanced process modeling tools anddigital twin functionalities, implementing model-based design ofexperiments for process characterization and risk assessment.
Develops experimental designs and workflows for model development,validation, and verification. Collaborates with cross-functionaland external partners to develop and deploy digital twins of unitoperations. Partners with Automation, Manufacturing, ProcessEngineers, and PAT experts to develop modeling and simulation(M&S) solutions that can be deployed across the globalorganization for in-silico process design, development, andoptimization. Recommends, justifies and implements in silico toolsand an ” in-silico first” approach to process developmentResponsible for authoring relevant sections of regulatorydocuments, validation plans, reports and peer reviewed manuscripts.
Proactively analyze technical issues and coordinate potentialresolutions with project team members based on model and simulationpredictions.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
Education andExperience:
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering ora related pharmaceutical science with 5 years of relevant industryexperience. Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering or a relatedpharmaceutical science with 3 years of relevant industryexperience. Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or a relatedpharmaceutical science with 0 years of relevant industryexperience. Strong knowledge and understanding of chemical reactionengineering and catalysis, with proven ability to demonstrateskills in these fields. Strong knowledge and understanding oftransport phenomena and thermodynamics. Experience withcommercially available reaction kinetic modeling software such asReactionLab, Dynochem, gPROMS and COMSOL. Experience withcommercially available software for computational fluid dynamics(CFD) modeling such as Ansys, Star CCM, MStar CFD. Proficient incommunicating and data collection from systems such as sensors,controllers, and industrial systems. Experience with Matlab,Python, R, SQL, and good coding practices.
Preferred:
Experiencewith common statistical methods, basic data science principles, andAI/ML methodologies. Hands-on experience in wet lab processdevelopment. Experience in multivariate analysis and PrincipalComponent Analysis (PCA). Understanding of synthetic moleculeprocess development activities. Understanding of current GoodManufacturing Practices (cGMP).

Base Salary Range:
$111,800.00
- $175,670.
00 The estimated salary range reflects ananticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offeredmay depend on a variety of factors, including the qualifications ofthe individual applicant for the position, years of relevantexperience, specific and unique skills, level of educationattained, certifications or other professional licenses held, andthe location in which the applicant lives and/or from which theywill be performing the job.
The actual base salary offered will bein accordance with state or local minimum wage requirements for thejob location. U.S. based employees may be eligible for short-termand/or long-termincentives.
