Shift 1 Position Summary The Oncology Data Specialistassures thorough, accurate and quality data collection as requiredby the Commission on Cancer (CoC), the Surveillance, Epidemiologyand End Results Program (SEER) and State of Connecticut. Thisincludes case-finding, abstraction, follow-up and reportingrequirements. This role will maintain accurate cancer registrydata, ensuring all cancer cases are documented and reported incompliance with national standards. Essential Duties ℜsponsibilities Under general supervision the Oncology DataSpecialist will; Review medical records to identify and abstractcancer cases and related information. Collect detailed data onpatient demographics, tumor characteristics, staging, treatment,and outcomes. Maintain an accurate, up-to-date cancer registry,ensuring comprehensive and timely data entry Perform datavalidation and quality checks to ensure completeness andconsistency of the cancer registry. Monitor data trends and resolvediscrepancies in the dataset through communication with medicalstaff or external organizations. Ensure that all data complies withindustry standards and regulations, such as the American College ofSurgeons (ACoS) and the Commission on Cancer (CoC) guidelinesPrepare and submit cancer registry reports to state, national, andregulatory agencies as required (e.g., SEER, National CancerDatabase). Ensure compliance with HIPAA and other confidentialityregulations when handling patient information. Assist in preparingdata for quality assurance, audits, and accreditation reviews. Workclosely with physicians, clinical staff, and healthcare providersto gather accurate and complete cancer data. Serve as a resourcefor oncology teams by providing data for case reviews, performanceimprovement initiatives, and clinical research. Collaborate withmultidisciplinary teams to improve data collection processes andaccuracy. Participate in the analysis of cancer data to identifytrends, survival rates, and outcomes for internal reporting orexternal research studies. Coordinates weekly tumor boards for theinterdisciplinary team, this includes preparing detailed casesummaries for each case presented. Support research initiatives byproviding tumor registry data for studies and clinical trials.
Assist in tracking patient outcomes and treatment patterns to guidecancer care planning. Stay current with changes in tumor registrystandards, coding systems (e.g., ICD-10, AJCC staging), and cancercare practices. Participate in professional development andcertification programs to maintain and enhance expertise in tumorregistry operations. Adheres to all

MinimumQualifications 5 years experience in Cancer Registry 3 yearsexperience reporting to national cancer databases or registriesExperience with cancer registry software (e.g., SEER, CoC tools,and other data management systems) Associate’s Degree in HealthInformation Management, Medical Records or other related fieldCertified Oncology Data Specialist Preferred Qualifications 3 yearsexperience in medical coding, healthcare data, and/or oncologyterminology Bachelors Degree in Health Information Management,Medical Records or other related field
