Overview
GDC IT Solutions is currently seeking a Database Administrator to support the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) in a hybrid capacity, with a minimum of 1 day per week onsite in Harrisburg, PA. This is a 6-month contract-to-hire position offering the opportunity to work on mission-critical database systems in both cloud and on-prem environments. Candidates must be Pennsylvania residents and able to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation.
Position Overview
As a Database Administrator, you will be responsible for providing technical support and maintenance for Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL environments across their full lifecycle. You will work as part of a collaborative team, managing database performance, availability, design, upgrades, and disaster recovery. The ideal candidate is highly proficient in troubleshooting, tuning, and implementing modern database technologies with the flexibility to operate in hybrid infrastructure models.
Responsibilities
Maintain and manage database structure, backups, recovery processes, replication, and performance tuning.
Support full lifecycle of databases including analysis, logical and physical design, implementation, and monitoring.
Troubleshoot root causes of database issues and develop effective solutions or workarounds.
Monitor activity and file usage; implement proactive database monitoring procedures to ensure uptime and performance.
Collaborate with internal IT teams, business units, and third-party vendors to define requirements and install databases.
Install and upgrade database software to ensure optimal performance and compatibility.
Serve as Database Administrator for projects of varying complexity, providing technical guidance and hands-on support.
Participate in infrastructure planning, configuration changes, and upgrades.
Ensure database development aligns with data strategies, standards, and security policies.
Test systems and databases for compliance with standards and functional specifications.
Participate in a 24x7x365 on-call rotation and maintain reliable home internet for remote response.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
2-5 years of hands-on experience supporting Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL.
Proficiency in database performance tuning, monitoring, and backup/recovery strategies.
Intermediate experience in physical data modeling and database design principles.
Solid understanding of database management systems (DBMS) and troubleshooting methodologies.
Effective communication skills for working across technical and non-technical teams.
Ability to plan, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks or projects simultaneously.
Competency in analyzing moderately complex information and proposing viable solutions.
Preferred Experience
Experience developing or supporting enterprise data strategies and related policies.
Previous participation in cloud migration or hybrid database environments.
Familiarity with automation or scripting related to database administration.
