Job Description
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is evolving into a modern media company and so is our data stack. We’re looking for a Senior Manager of Data, someone who is a hybrid thinker and builder. Someone who can architect and implement modern data workflows, think strategically about how data serves the business, and lead a small but mighty team of senior engineers. This role is perfect for someone who loves the power of dbt and Snowflake, prefers clean pipelines over legacy complexity, and understands that business logic is just as important as elegant code.
You’ll help modernize our data stack, implement smart tooling, and translate business needs into scalable data solutions. You’ll collaborate cross-functionally to ensure data is usable, reliable, and driving the business forward. We’re not encumbered by legacy systems — we’re building clean, fast, and modern from the ground up. You’ll have the space to move quickly, think big, and shape how data flows across the organization.
What You’ll Do
Lead and mentor a small team of data engineers and developers; support their growth and execution
Architect and evolve our modern data stack using tools like dbt, Snowflake, and Amplitude
Translate complex business requirements into clear, scalable data models and pipelines
Be hands-on when needed — writing SQL, troubleshooting models, or QA’ing transformations
Collaborate cross-functionally with analysts, product teams, marketers, and execs to deliver trustworthy, usable data
Implement and enforce best practices in data modeling, testing, documentation, and code versioning
Help define our long-term data platform strategy — from tooling to governance
Who You Are
A technical leader with strong SQL skills and deep experience in modern data tooling
Proficient with dbt — you’ve built robust data models and understand modular design and testing
Comfortable guiding and mentoring engineers, doing performance reviews, and helping people grow
Strategic thinker: you don’t just build things, you ask why and connect it back to business needs
Comfortable working in fast-paced environments where requirements evolve and priorities shift
Bonus points for experience with Amplitude, Airbyte, Git, Tableau, Hex, or similar tools
You’re not here for legacy tech (no thanks, Oracle) — you want to build what’s next
Why You’ll Love This Role
You’ll shape the foundation of a modern, efficient, scalable data platform
You’ll manage smart, experienced engineers and work closely with leadership
You’ll see your work make a direct impact across teams and decisions
We move quickly, think collaboratively, and avoid red tape
You’ll be part of a growing data organization that values clarity, curiosity, and velocity
Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline and 8 years’ experience in a related field. The right candidate could also have a different combination, such as a master’s degree and 6 years’ experience; a Ph.D. and 3 years’ experience in a related field; or 12 years’ experience in a related field
- 3+ years’ experience in management or leadership role
Preferred candidates will have 10+ years of experience; 7+ years in data engineering, data architecture, or related roles.
Proven track record managing Snowflake environments and ETL pipelines.
Extensive experience designing and maintaining data warehouses.
Hands-on experience with web analytics tools and integrating them into data ecosystems.
