The Burlington Police Department is hiring for a Desk Information Specialist to work part time!

What you will do: An employee in this class is responsible for assisting the general public, and City personnel, in obtaining the necessary service they need. Work includes entering data into the computer database, reviewing data entered, assisting customers in person and on the phone with information relating to procedures, complaints, claims and other information, and general office support work. This employee must use courtesy and tact, as there is frequent contact with the public. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Records Section Supervisor. The employee will be evaluated for accuracy and integrity of information, and for customer service. Work is checked by the review of written work, observation, data entered into the computer, phone voice recordings, and customer feedback.

This is a part-time position. Work will be performed during the hours of 8am and 5pm, Monday-Friday. The position would work 10-20 hours per week, as agreed upon with the supervisor.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Public Interaction & Customer ServiceGreet and assist visitors, citizens, and personnel in a professional and courteous manner.

Respond to public inquiries in person, by phone, and via email regarding police services, reports, procedures, and general information.

Direct individuals to appropriate departments or personnel based on their needs.

Provide information on community policing efforts, crime prevention programs, and department-sponsored events.

Serve as a communication bridge between the public and sworn officers or detectives, relaying non-emergency messages and assisting with follow-up communications.

Administrative SupportDistribute police reports, accident reports, and other documents in accordance with public records laws and department policy.

Record and route complaints to the appropriate division or personnel. Perform data entry and maintain databases for incident tracking, complaints, and visitor logsRecordkeeping & FilingFile, organize, and retrieve public documents. Ensure secure handling of sensitive or confidential information in accordance with legal and departmental guidelines.

Security & Access ControlMonitor and control access to secure areas of the police department. Report suspicious behavior or security concerns to appropriate personnel. Follow procedures for emergency situations and coordinate with dispatch or sworn personnel when urgent concerns arise.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Work in this class is described as being sedentary and seldom requires much physical exertion to complete tasks.

Work typically involves the ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of kneeling, standing, walking, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.

Work necessitates visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned in preparing and analyzing figures, accounting, transcription, computer terminal viewing and extensive reading. Working conditions include inside environmental conditions.
