Minimum Preparation for

Work:
  • Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geographic Information Science or related field, or a two-year technical certificate and;
  • Two (2) years of pertinent experience.
    Or
  • Combination of education, training, and/or work experience equal to or higher than the requirements listed above as determined by Human Resources.
Necessary Special Requirements:
  • Possession of an appropriate driver license for equipment operated and any license, training or certification required by law or regulation to complete assigned tasks.
Nature of Work:

The GIS Technician is a classified position. This is technical and professional work in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Work involves the performance of general and specialized Geographic Information Systems functions and related administrative duties. Work is performed under the general supervision of a senior technician or department supervisor. Performance is evaluated based on observed and achieved results.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Consults with users and assists GIS analyst in conducting information assessments to define user needs and systems requirements.
  • Handles internal service requests by retrieving and providing GIS layers, reports, and maps under supervision.
  • Performs data entry and routine updates to spatial and tabular GIS databases to ensure data accuracy and completeness.
  • Supports quality assurance and quality control processes by reviewing GIS layers and correcting geometry, topology, and attribute errors.
  • Designs and updates cartographic templates and standardized maps for recurring departmental needs.
  • Participates in testing GIS applications or system updates by documenting results and reporting bugs or errors to senior staff.
  • Trains other City users on the use of GIS applications.
  • Creates maps from GIS data; creates tables, charts, posters, other visualizations. Creates new GIS data from CAD drawings, GPS data, etc.
  • Researches GIS data from other sources (HUD, census, etc.).
  • Performs daily system checks on GIS/311/work order management system, with some minor fixes performed, or notifications if major fixes need to be made.
  • Provides backup for senior GIS system person as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of computer processing operations, procedures, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of problem-solving techniques.
  • Knowledge of computers and software.
  • Knowledge in a variety of computer languages and pertinent theory, methods, procedures, and skills.
  • Knowledge of installing and configuring PC’s, printers, monitors, and other peripheral equipment.
  • Knowledge of web development.
  • Knowledge of computer programming.
  • Technical knowledge in computers for the ability to gather, assemble, correlate, and analyze facts and devise solutions.
  • Ability to process information logically and solve problems.
  • Ability to develop training programs related to computer processing.
  • Ability to monitor and resolve problems with computer systems components.
  • Ability to identify and define user task needs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with associates and the general public.

Mental and Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to hold or feel, reach with hands and arms, walk, talk and hear. Specific vision abilities include near distance, far distance, color, and peripheral vision, and depth perception. The employee regularly lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 45 pounds.
