POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of PACS Systems will oversee the planning, implementation, optimization, and support of Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) across a multi-hospital healthcare system. This individual is responsible for ensuring seamless operation, integration, and accessibility of imaging systems to support clinical workflows and improve patient care. The Director will lead a team of technical engineers, administrators, and analysts, collaborate with radiology and clinical teams, and align PACS systems with organizational goals and compliance standards.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop and execute the strategic vision for PACS systems across the healthcare system, aligning with clinical and operational priorities. Provide leadership for PACS-related projects, including system upgrades, migrations, and integrations. Manage local PACS support, addressing system issues while collaborating with BioMed support teams to ensure optimal functionality and maintenance. Collaborate with stakeholders to identify opportunities for workflow improvements and technology innovations in imaging systems. Oversee the administration, maintenance, and performance of CPACS and RPACS systems, ensuring reliability and minimal downtime. Provide hands-on support of PACS solutions as needed to ensure team success and solution stability. Radiology support team and tool utilization across the hospital environment. Monitor system capacity, scalability, and performance metrics, implementing improvements as needed. Build, manage, and mentor a team of PACS administrators and IT support staff. Allocate resources effectively to balance project priorities and operational needs. Foster a culture of collaboration, professional development, and continuous improvement within the team. Ensure PACS systems meet regulatory compliance requirements such as HIPAA, CMS, and DICOM standards. Implement security measures to protect sensitive patient data and imaging records. Develop and maintain documentation for audit trails and system configurations. Partner with radiologists, imaging department leadership, and clinical teams to gather requirements and optimize workflows. Act as a liaison between IT and clinical stakeholders, ensuring imaging systems meet user needs and enhance patient care. Engage with vendors to manage service-level agreements, software updates, and system support contracts. Leverage reporting tools to track system usage, performance, and image storage metrics. Provide insights and recommendations to executive leadership regarding technology investments and innovations. Develop and maintain solutions for remote PACS reads, ensuring efficient and accurate image access for external requests.
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Healthcare Informatics, Information Technology, or a related field (required). 7+ years of experience in managing PACS systems in multi-hospital healthcare environments. Proven track record of successful project leadership in IT imaging systems implementation.
SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS
Proficiency in PACS systems like Change Healthcare, GE Centricity, Philips IntelliSpace, FujiFilm Synapse, or similar platforms. Strong understanding of DICOM, HL7, and imaging system interoperability. Ability to manage cross-functional teams and complex projects. Demonstrated ability to engage with clinicians, technical staff, and executive stakeholders effectively. Relevant certifications such as CIIP (Certified Imaging Informatics Professional) or PACS-specific credentials are preferred. Experience with emerging technologies such as AI-driven image analysis, cloud-based PACS solutions, and mobile access for imaging systems.
