Contracts HRIS Senior level SaaS Leadership Lawson SDLC Full Job Description Position Summary Books-A-Million is seeking a collaborative and results-oriented Director of Enterprise Applications to lead the strategy, operations, and transformation of critical enterprise application systems across the business. This senior leader will oversee the full suite of core systems—from legacy AS/400 applications to modern HRIS and EDI platforms assuring stability, performance, and strategic alignment with the company’s digital and business objectives. This position is responsible for a dynamic team of 5-6 direct reports and 2 indirect reports across AS400, HRIS, and EDI domains. The role is ideal for a hands-on leader who excels at building relationships, driving modernization, and balancing operational excellence with forward-looking change. Key Areas of Ownership Core Application Domains iSeries (AS/400) Systems, Includes ownership of: JDA MMS (Merchandise Management System), D&W WMS (Warehouse Management System), Lawson AP/GL (Accounts Payable / General Ledger) Development oversight in RPG, Free Form RPGLE, CL, CLLE, Embedded
SQL, DB2

HRIS & Payroll Systems:
Infor CloudSuite GHR Manage system integrity, workflows, and integrations. Partner with HR leaders to support business process improvements and employee experience enhancements. EDI Operations & Integration Manage EDI workflows, data integrity, and vendor connectivity across key documents: Purchase Orders (850), PO Acknowledgements (855), Invoices (810), Advance Ship Notices (856) and more. Collaborate with supply chain, vendor and customer partners, and IT integration teams to streamline transactional processes. Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership Lead the evolution of enterprise applications strategy in alignment with business and IT goals. Modernize legacy platforms through thoughtful planning, requirements gathering, software selections, and progressive implementation while maintaining business continuity. Champion scalable, secure, and efficient solutions that support Books-A-Million’s operational growth and customer engagement. Team Leadership & Development Direct a cross-functional team of developers, analysts, and specialists across multiple domains. Coach, mentor, and grow internal talent while fostering a culture of accountability, performance, and partnership. Manage workloads, priorities, and capacity planning to ensure delivery on strategic and operational goals. Business Alignment & Relationship Building Act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, translating business needs into scalable application strategies. Build strong partnerships across departments—including HR, Finance, Supply Chain, and Store Operations—to ensure systems meet functional needs. Establish feedback loops and governance structures to prioritize work and communicate status effectively. Operational Excellence Oversee daily operations of enterprise systems, ensuring performance, availability, and user satisfaction. Manage vendor relationships, licensing, and service contracts. Implement process improvements, system documentation, and knowledge sharing across teams. Change Management & Transformation Lead change efforts across application portfolios, ensuring stakeholders are engaged and impacts are well-communicated. Promote best practices in testing, deployment, and lifecycle management. Foster a modern mindset while respecting and stabilizing legacy infrastructure.
Qualifications Required:
10+ years of experience in enterprise application management or equivalent technology leadership roles. 5+ years of direct people management experience across cross-functional technical teams. Experience managing AS400/iSeries systems, Modern HRIS platforms, EDI integrations and document standards (X12 850, 855, 810, 856, etc.). Strong knowledge of software development life cycle (SDLC), release/change management, and production support. Ability to engage technical and non-technical audiences and lead teams through complex initiatives.
Preferred:
Experience with both legacy and cloud/SaaS application models. Background in retail, supply chain, or multi-location businesses.
