Job Description

The Fiber Network Engineer will be responsible for ensuring the stability and integrity of the fiber optic network. This is achieved by planning, designing, developing, and maintaining the entire fiber network, from the central office to the end-use devices. The Fiber Network Engineer will participate in the installation, monitoring, maintenance, Tiers 1, 2, and 3 support, and optimization of all network hardware and software. This position will be required to analyze and resolve network hardware and software problems in a timely and accurate manner. Customer service interactions and assistance will be required from time-to-time. This client exists to bring communications through fiber internet and phone service to members and others throughout South Mississippi and to improve the economy and quality of life in their community.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The Fiber Network Engineer will ensure the performance and consistency of day-to-day operations and reliability of the network. Install, configure, and maintain broadband equipment, including but not limited to the following: Arista routers and switches, Calix

GPON/XGS-PON

platforms, Juniper Routers and Switches, basic network switches, Linux Servers, Multi-Protocol Layer Switching (MPLS), Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), External Border Gateway Protocol (EBGP), Internal Border Gateway Protocol (IBGP), Intermediate System to Intermediate System protocol (IS-IS), Open Shortest Path First protocol (OSPF), and VMware. The Fiber Network Engineer will troubleshoot, repair network, and system failures; Engage with vendor support to resolve all system-related impairments; develop and maintain up-to-date documentation related to the topology and configuration specifications of the network; and develop and execute detailed methods of procedure (MOPs) related to the maintenance and deployment of equipment while ensuring interoperability and network availability. The Fiber Network Engineer will create and maintain documentation in relation to network configuration, mapping, processes, and service records; conduct research on network products, services, protocols, and standards to remain up to date on developments in the networking industry; evaluate network performance, identify bottlenecks, and find ways of improvement, while ensuring long-term efficiency of the network; develop, implement and maintain policies, procedures, and associated training plans for network administration, usage, system backup, and disaster recovery; and monitor availability of security and firmware updates, making recommendations, and working with the Systems team to schedule and update systems.

REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in telecommunications, network engineering, computer science, or a related field is preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience (outlined below). Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience with router and switch configuration in an enterprise or service provider setting. Must have at least a working knowledge of the following: Routing protocols, including but not limited to Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), Intermediate System to Intermediate System routing protocol (IS-IS), Open Shortest Path First routing protocol (OSPF), and Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS); Fiber-based WAN connections, Pseudowire circuits, and familiarity with Metro Ethernet Forums (MEF); Private networking using VLAN separation, Integrated Routing and Bridging (IRB), and MPLS VPNv4 or SD-WAN; VLAN tagging and quality of service using 802.1p QoS; Firewalls, access lists, Network Address Translation (NAT), and VPNs; GPON or other broadband-based access layer technologies; Juniper, Arista, and Calix experience; Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and VoIP configuration and troubleshooting; and Network testing utilities such as Wireshark, tcpdump, and traceroute.
