07/01/2025 Job title: Network and Cybersecurity Specialist Reports to: Assistant Director of Technology, Director of Technology Receives guidance from: Director, District Administration and Support Staff, Assistant Superintendent Overtime status: Compliant with position, salary and FLSA regulations Job purpose: In keeping with the tradition of excellence at Rankin County School District (RCSD), the Network and Cybersecurity Specialist ensures secure, reliable, and optimized network infrastructure to support teaching, learning, and district operations. This role encompasses installation, configuration, maintenance, cybersecurity enforcement, and continuous improvement of all networked systems serving staff and students. Duties and responsibilities:
Install, configure, and maintain wireless access points, network switches, and core network devices Manage and secure the district’s wireless network, including authentication, access controls, and network segmentation for device groups. Install and terminate fiber connections and troubleshoot connectivity problems Monitor and respond to network alerts, outages, and performance issues; escalate complex issues when necessary Implement cybersecurity best practices at the network layer, including network firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), and content filtering. Conduct regular vulnerability scans, assist in risk assessments, and contribute to incident response efforts as directed by the Technology Department. Support the management of the district’s directory infrastructure (Active Directory, Azure AD), ensuring secure identity and access controls. Assist with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of server-based applications Write and maintain automation scripts (Python preferred) for network operations, monitoring, patching, and reporting. Stay current with emerging technologies, cybersecurity threats, mitigation techniques, and best practices through professional development and certifications. Perform any other tasks as required by the Network Administrator, Assistant Director, or the Director of Technology. Lead and attend staff meetings/trainings as applicable; serve on staff committees Assume responsibility for own professional growth and development, for keeping current with literature, new research findings, for attending appropriate professional meetings and conferences, and to maintain any credits and/or continued education for maintenance of licensure/qualifications required for the position Maintain and accept responsibility for any district owned fixed asset item assigned to employee and ensure appropriate use by following district policies for acceptable use Undergo periodic evaluations according to state and board policy procedures Maintain confidentiality Regular, dependable attendance is an essential function of this position Perform such other and not specifically enumerated duties as may be requested by the Board of Education, superintendent, administrator, director or established by district policy Read, understand, and abide by Employee Conduct Policy, GAB, all other District, State and Federal policies, and procedures and protocols as established by RCSD and the
Mississippi Educator Code of Conduct Qualifications:
Education Level:
Bachelor’s Degree in Technology Related Field or a minimum of five years related experience
Certification:
Certification in related areas (Apple, Cisco, A+, etc)
Other Requirements:
Experience in MacOS, iOS, and Windows OS, Excellent troubleshooting skills, Good oral and written communication skills, Experience in configuration of scripts and APIs, Coding knowledge and experience (Python specifically), Experience writing API scripts, Experience installing and maintaining wireless networks, Experience installing and maintaining switches, Experience with mobile device management solutions.
