TITLE:

Senior Applied Scientist

Serve as a member of the Data 360 team, within the Data Engineering Department, responsible for the quality, content, and timely delivery of Etsy’s core analytics and business intelligence data sets. The Data 360 group builds and maintains tools to help the rest of the company find, transform, store, and visualize their data. We are looking for a skilled engineer who cares about the data that flows through pipelines and the internal customers who will use that data. We work in Scala, Python, Java, and SQL, and we work with technologies like Hadoop, Kafka, Scalding, Airflow, Avro/Thrift, Vertica, Looker, GCS, Dataproc, and BigQuery. Responsibilities include

• Participate in the daily delivery of hundreds of business-critical datasets in batch and streaming
• Define, maintain, and monitor the ETL’s that generate our core business analytics datasets
• Build and maintain internal tools for finding, querying, transforming and visualizing data
• Support the company’s analytics database and work to establish best practices for users of it
• Work with and improve code
• Mentor other engineers
• Flexible with languages and tools and willing to learn whatever is necessary to get the job done
• Take on unconstrained problems and know when to seek help
• Writing and scheduling ETL pipelines, either batch or streaming
• Write SQL queries for exploration and analysis
• Build and modify full-stack internal tool web apps
• Contribute to the creation of the team’s Roadmap by suggesting high-value customer problems to solve along with plausible solutions

REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering (any), Data Science, related technical field, or equivalent, and 5 years of experience, OR Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering (any), Data Science, related technical field, or equivalent and 3 years of experience. Requires 3 years of experience in/with: Scala and functional programming. Requires 3 years of experience in/with: Apache Spark or similar frameworks; and writing and supporting efficient and optimized ETL pipelines. Requires 3 years of experience in/with: running, monitoring, optimizing (performance and cost) and debugging bigdata jobs in a cloud compute environment such as GCP Dataproc. Requires 3 years of experience in/with: writing analytical SQL queries to dig into data quality issues and/or inform work, and tools including Looker to visualize the output of such queries. Requires 3 years of experience in/with: traditional data warehousing technologies, including the creation and maintenance of core tables and datasets. Requires 2 years of experience in/with: deploying and scheduling ETL jobs on Apache Airflow or similar. Requires 2 years of experience in/with: web and mobile application data collection processes for the purpose of bot and user behavior analytics
