Job Title:

Substation Protection and Control Design Engineer III

Location:

Salary Range:

$140,000•$170,000 annually We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Substation Protection and Control Design Engineer III to join our transmission substation engineering and design team. This advanced professional role will be critical in delivering safe, cost-effective, and high-quality engineering and design services for a diverse range of utility substation projects, including conventional substations, battery energy storage systems, and solar collector substations.
The successful candidate will provide technical leadership, expertise, and oversight on complex engineering and technical problems. This position requires a deep understanding of protection and control fundamentals, the ability to lead discipline-specific work for projects, and the capacity to perform responsible charge engineering duties. Key Responsibilities:

Provide expert protection and control design, engineering, and technical support for transmission substation projects.
Offer technical competency and direction on complex engineering and technical problems, ensuring adherence to industry standards and best practices.
Lead the protection and control discipline work for assigned projects, managing project schedules and budgets effectively.
Perform responsible charge engineering duties, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of design work.
Support proposal development and contribute to accurate project cost estimations.
Design and develop comprehensive protection schemes for various substation and transmission line equipment, including bus, line, capacitor, and transformer protection, as well as associated settings.
Develop and engineer P&C designs for utility stations up to 500kV, including one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, relay settings, and SCADA integration.
Perform essential studies and create detailed reports for coordination, voltage drop, fault current, and insulation coordination.
Conduct calculations and studies utilizing client-specified software and adherence to their standards.
Oversee the work of junior engineering staff and actively mentor designers/drafters, fostering their professional growth.
Rigorously check designs for accuracy, aesthetic presentation, and strict adherence to customer standards.
Collaborate and communicate effectively with other design disciplines, internal colleagues, construction contractors, consultants, and clients.
Conduct site visits as necessary to advise on P&C engineering issues and implement design modifications to resolve construction challenges.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from an

EAC/ABET

accredited Engineering Program is required. Alternatively, an approved evaluation of non-ABET credentials by NCEES, or graduation from a Master’s or Doctoral Program in Engineering from an institution with

EAC/ABET

accredited Undergraduate Engineering Programs will be considered.
5 to 7 years of progressive experience as a practicing engineer in substation protection and control design.
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or the ability to obtain licensure within one year of hire.

Required Skills and Abilities:

Advanced understanding of protection and control fundamentals as applied to utility substation and transmission line equipment.
Proficiency in the design of protection schemes for a variety of substation and transmission line equipment, including setting development.
Advanced understanding of SCADA communication design.
Proven ability to lead a team of engineers and designers in a lead engineer capacity.
Proficiency in the principles of project management.
Basic understanding of overall substation design, including equipment arrangements.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think both creatively and logically to resolve complex design and development issues.
Proficient in researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting those recommendations.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to deal effectively with diverse individuals and stakeholders.
Self-motivated, capable of working independently, and a strong team player.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and provide effective leadership to other team members. #MISC123
