This individual will work under the supervision of the Charlotte Water Engineering Division. The candidate can be a student currently enrolled in a post-secondary education program in Engineering, Math, Construction or Project Management, or related curriculum, or have post-secondary experience in the related areas. The program introduces the future water professional to the various initiatives, programs, and project management activities within Charlotte Water while gaining valuable engineering and project management experience. Depending on division supported, candidates will understand more about various infrastructure assets associated with treatment and conveyance of water and wastewater. All candidates will gain exposure to Trimble, ESRI, Innovyze and AutoCAD software products. The co-op participant must be able to commit to the full one-year assignment and be available to work an agreed upon weekly/hourly schedule. The training will include exposure to Charlotte Water Engineering division in addition to gaining job readiness skills.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Applicants for this position will learn the following tasks as it pertains to the daily work operations at Charlotte Water. The work will include rotations with various workgroups to experience the full scope of an infrastructure project and utility management initiatives. Assist with various phases of water and wastewater infrastructure projects, including planning, design, and construction activities. Support field survey efforts with basic equipment training and help process data for use in AutoCAD, ESRI and Innovyze products. Aid in preparing design documents for pipeline improvements and learn about permitting and regulatory considerations. Participate in site visits and meetings, including pre-design walks, construction observations, project closeouts and system evaluations. Help interpret hydraulic modeling and GIS data and contribute to mapping and spatial analysis tasks. Support documentation efforts by helping prepare reports, organize project data, and compile as-built records. Gain exposure to industry software such as Innovyze, AutoCAD, ESRI, and Trimble products.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK
Post-secondary experience, current or recent graduate in an accredited college or university (Associates
- Bachelors) with major course work in a related field of study specific to the departmental or work assignment.
Preferred Qualifications Exposure to design, installation or maintenance of water and sanitary sewer (wastewater) infrastructure and/or project management of infrastructure projects
Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:
Requires a valid driver’s license
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Proficient with Microsoft Office Knowledge of fundamental engineering principles applied to project planning, design and/or construction of water and wastewater infrastructure Skill in communication, both verbally and in writing Skill in Microsoft Office Suite products and outputs Ability to plan, prioritize and organize work and complete assignments with supervision Ability to work well with others in a team environment Ability to read and interpret design plans Ability to interact courteously and cooperatively in teams Ability to learn hydraulic, geospatial information system, and project management software packages such as: ArcPro, AutoCAD, Infoworks ICM, and e-Builder Ability to apply fundamental engineering principles to project design or planning
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is light work and requires applying 10 pounds of force frequently exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: feeling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, discriminating among sounds, mental acuity, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity in data/color/observations/equipment/ inspections, and walking.

Work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs. Requires occasional on-call emergency work.
