Summary:

Responsible for driving the Head Start route(s) as assigned, delivering preschoolers to and from their destinations in a safe, timely manner, following program and DHR guidelines, for checking the bus each time before traveling, seeing that every child is signed off/on bus accurately every time, and bus is walked to assure no child remains. Responsible for supervising Bus Aide while on the bus.

Primary duties:

Perform daily vehicle checks as per procedures and report any problems found with a vehicle immediately to Transportation Supervisor. Transport pre-school children and passengers to and from their destinations safely and promptly. Sign each child on/off the bus consistently following correct procedure. Maintain DHR required adult-child ratio on the bus at all times. Drive routes as assigned by Transportation Supervisor. Routes may change at any time depending on agency needs. May include early or late childcare routes. Pick up ONLY children listed on Weekly Transportation Checklist and keep on schedule. Observe children as they get on the bus; if seem ill must not be allowed on bus. If concern that is contagious, report concern to the Nutrition Services Supervisor or Center Operations Asst. or Clerk. Ensure that a child is dropped off with an adult listed on the release form. If no one is available, the child must be returned to Family Services Advocate at the center’s office. Assist bus aides in reinforce appropriate behavior of children while riding a bus. If transporting EHS children (up to three years) assure that children are in appropriate car seats strapped into bus seat properly and that there is one adult for every four EHS children on the bus. Walk bus after every drop-off according to ACHR procedure to be sure no child is left on bus; complete and sign Certification form in Center office in the morning.

Afternoon:

walk bus after last stop following procedures and call Transportation Assistant confirming no children are left on the bus. Complete trip sheets, vehicle checklists, and Transportation Checklist Weekly. Keep bus in clean condition, ready for use: sweep out vehicle daily; clean seats as needed; wash bus regularly unless other arrangements are made. During times when there is illness (flu, strep, head lice, etc.), disinfect bus. Provide other transportation as assigned/scheduled, including transporting bus aides between centers or children/staff on field trips, and parents for parent meeting (about once a quarter) and at other times as requested by supervisor. In the event of accident, follow accident procedures as prescribed by Alabama Law and ACHR Accident Procedure. Ensure bus receives required maintenance as scheduled. Attend mandated trainings (minimum of 40 hours/year to meet HS Performance Standards), meetings, and seek out staff development opportunities. All other duties as assigned.

Education and Other Requirements:

High School diploma or equivalent preferred. Commercial Driver’s License with passenger endorsement and School Bus License Clear motor vehicle report (MVR).
