POSITION TITLE

LIBRARY LOCATION

All Library Locations in Madison County

HOURS AND COMPENSATION

Full-time, 40 hours a week Monday through Friday, $15.50 an hour

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

: Responsible for operating a large utility van to transport materials, books, equipment, and supplies from one location to another. This position requires the ability to safely load and unload crates of materials at multiple locations as well as safely operating a large vehicle on a daily basis. This position is classified as Non-Exempt for the purpose of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the supervision of the Support Services Department Manager.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Acts as a team member to help fulfill the

Library’s Mission Statement:

“This is the public’s library. We empower individuals to create their own futures, explore the universe of ideas, and connect with our community and the world.” Collects, delivers, loads, unloads, carries, moves and transports large crates of Library materials, equipment, interdepartmental mail, money, supplies and other various materials and communications to and from all Library locations on a daily basis. Sorts and packs materials and other items at the Downtown Library for delivery; distributes incoming deliveries to the appropriate departments/branches; tracks completed deliveries for record keeping purposes. Remains physically and mentally alert to traffic and driving conditions; drives defensively and safely following all traffic rules and Library policies. Promptly reports any vehicle issues or needed maintenance. Conducts pre-trip inspection of the vehicle at the beginning of the route and post-trip inspection of the vehicle at the end of the route to ensure that the vehicle is operational and functioning properly; checks fluid levels and adds fuel, oil and water as needed; Promptly reports any vehicle performance problems to the appropriate personnel and works to ensure the vehicle is returned to safe operating conditions as soon as possible. Collaborates in arranging services for the maintenance and repair of the Library vehicles; delivers Library vehicles for regular maintenance, such as oil changes, etc. as well as washes, waxes and cleans the inside of vehicle as needed; purchases fuel for vehicle pursuant to Library policy. Trains back-up staff as appropriate. Maintains a daily written log of activities and mileage. Maintains good communication with supervisor. Requires regular and prompt attendance plus the ability to work well with others and work well as a team member.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Requires the mobility to stand, squat, stoop, stretch, climb, lift, carry, and shelve and retrieve books and materials from shelves and storage locations generally not exceeding 75 pounds. Must possess the mobility to push, pull and carry supplies and deliveries over uneven terrain generally not exceeding 75 pounds in all weather conditions. Must possess the vision required to read printed materials and a computer screen. Must possess the ability to hear and speak with the public both in person and over the telephone. Physical dexterity is required in the frequent use of hand-to-eye coordination and manipulative skills using fingers, limbs and body in the operation of vehicles. Work requires sitting for periods of time in a confined vehicle.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of office environments. Involves driving the Library vehicles outside on a daily basis traveling from the Downtown Library to the various Library locations which may involve various and unpredictable driving conditions which are affected by weather, other drivers, potential traffic hazards and changing road conditions. The employee may interact with upset staff and/or members of the public.

Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS

AND ABILITIES

Possess the temperament and good judgment necessary to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public, some of whom may be irate or unreasonable; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and posted schedules; ability to work evenings and weekends as needed; must possess the appropriate knowledge and ability to be able to safely drive all Library vehicles throughout the county; ability to lift, carry and transport large, bulky and heavy items from one location to another; ability to comprehend and follow the Library’s policies and procedures; ability to work independently to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines; ability to serve the public with friendliness, tact, and diplomacy

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency; or any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the above listed knowledge, skills and abilities is required. Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience driving a large utility and/or delivery van. Possession of a clean driving record including no accidents or violations in the past 3 years.
