NCDOT has the largest ferry fleet in North America, and we are looking for 8 Ferry Masters to join our teams in Southport, Hatteras, Pamlico River, and Cherry Branch. In this role, you will:
⦁ Have full responsibility for operating US Coast Guard-Inspected vessels across North Carolina near coastal, sound, and river waterways.
⦁ Supervise deck, above deck, and engine room crew.
⦁ Ensure safe operations and navigation of ferry vessels while underway and enforce safety guidelines and rules for vessel crew and passengers.
⦁ Operate vessels of varying gross tonnage on various waterways and in varying weather and work conditions.
⦁ Interpret radar, Global Positioning Systems and weather instruments, or oversee these operations.
⦁ Ensure compliance with all safety and Homeland Security rules and regulations.
⦁ Prepare written reports of work done for supervisor review.
⦁ Participate in US Coast Guard inspections.
⦁ Navigate vessels on precharted courses between dock terminals.
⦁ Read weather instruments.
⦁ Operate electrical communications devices.
⦁ Adhere to navigational regulations to ensure safe passage while underway.
⦁ Direct crews in vessel operational and maintenance functions.
⦁ Confer with the marine engineer on routine, emergency repair, and maintenance problems.
⦁ Take appropriate action to remedy problems.
⦁ Assist NCDOT Ferry and US Coast Guard staff in making safety inspections.
⦁ Take immediate action to correct inadequacies determined by such inspections.
⦁ Conduct safety meetings and emergency drills to ensure maximum protection for crew and passengers.
⦁ Maintain proper safety equipment and periodically inspect equipment to maintain working order.
⦁ Periodically check conditions of all docking facilities.
⦁ Supervise loading and discharging of vehicles, passengers, and cargo.
⦁ Train and supervise junior crew members. Notes
⦁ This position works a 7 days on/7 days off schedule.
⦁ Your work will be reviewed by superiors through written reports and by US Coast Guard inspections. What You Bring
⦁ Knowledge of the operations and basic maintenance of marine vessels.
⦁ Knowledge of applicable state, federal, and US Coast Guard laws and regulations.
⦁ Knowledge of radar, navigational, Global Positioning Systems, and communications equipment relating to ferry or similar vessel operations.
⦁ Skills supervising and instructing crew in maritime transportation.
⦁ Skills to chart readings and plot courses.
⦁ Experience navigating vessels involving ship handling and seamanship.
⦁ A valid Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) of 1600 gross registered tons (GRT) Inland Waters Master or higher.
⦁ A current USCG Medical card.
⦁ A valid US Coast Guard license as Master of Inspected Ferry Vessels with 1600 gross tons or higher.
⦁ A valid certificate as Radar Observer issued by an institution approved by the US Coast Guard.
⦁ A valid Marine Radio Operator permit issued by the Federal Communications Commission.
