Description The College Fleet Captain is responsible for operating vessels owned by the College of the Florida Keys (CFK) and used in College activities, including Marine Science and Technology courses, College activities, Sponsored Programs, and third-party contracts. This position is also responsible for College vessel crew training, preparing College vessels for United States Coast Guard (USCG) inspections, and scheduling and performing regular preventive maintenance. Work is performed under the supervision of the Director, Marine Science and Technology. Examples of Duties 1. Responsible for the safe and prudent operation of College vessels.
2. Maintains strict inventory and control of all equipment for College vessels.
3. Prepares College vessels for required USCG inspections.
4. Ensures that College vessels have all necessary and required safety equipment and documentation as required by the USCG regulations for safe vessel operations.
5. Schedules and performs required safety checks and drills (e.g., abandon ship, man overboard, fire) for College vessels.
6. Be familiar with risk management and implementation, and the updating of emergency action plans.
7. Discuss inclement weather and provide recommendations to other captains, as necessary.
8. Conducts routine preventative maintenance on College vessels.
9. Requisition equipment, materials, supplies, maintenance, and services to support the College fleet.
10. Schedules and coordinates maintenance requiring haul out.
11. Coordinates the Request for Use of Marine Vessels, including staffing, scheduling, and cancellations. 12. Coordinates the contracted use of College vessels, including equipment requirements, staffing, and scheduling.
13. Keeps Director abreast of any CFK vessel maintenance or service requirements.
14. Works collaboratively with captains, faculty, deck hands, and technical advisors.
15. Teaches four (4) courses annually, or a total of 12 credits minimum annually.
16. Hires, supervises, and orients all part-time captains and deckhands. 17. Prepares the College fleet for tropical storms.
18. Conducts training for part-time captains and crew (e.g., deckhands, technical advisors) on CFK vessel preparation, safe and prudent operation, fueling, emergency procedures, and breakdown for approved vessel usage.
19. Assist in College recruitment and retention efforts, as appropriate.

Qualifications Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Knowledge of navigable waterways surrounding the Lower Florida Keys and Key West.
  • Knowledge of the local diving environment, including local reefs and local wrecks.
  • Knowledge and experience in monitoring weather forecasts and weather radar.
  • Knowledge of basic vessel maintenance and outboard engine troubleshooting.
  • Ability to carry out clerical duties (e.g., collect, check, and maintain required paperwork and logbook information).
  • Ability to carry out job duties with minimal or no direct supervision.
  • Possess strong critical thinking, decision-making, and communication skills.
  • Work in a team environment.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

Education and Qualifications:

Associate’s degree in Marine Engineering, Marine Technology, or Seamanship, and two years of relevant work experience, or the following specific industry certification, or any associate degree with five years of relevant work experience and the following specific industry certification, or any baccalaureate degree (or higher) and the following specific industry certification:

  • USCG Merchant Mariner Credential – Master 25 Gross Tons or higher required.
  • Three (3) years’ teaching experience in higher education preferred.
  • Experience working in or with the CFK Marine Science and Technology programs preferred.
  • Minimum six (6) months’ work experience as captain on an inspected vessel preferred.
  • Active member of the Maritime Consortium required.
  • Must be able to pass random drug testing.

(A comparable amount of training, education, or experience may be substituted for the above minimum qualifications.)
