Lead Boat Captain (Seasonal) 3.0 3.0 out of 5 stars 600 Huron Avenue, Atlantic City, NJ 08401 Position Summary The Lead Captain is a key member of the Ballyhoo Marine Operations (BMO) team, responsible for the successful execution of daily vessel activities and upholding the standards, safety, and efficiency expected of all BMO crew members. Reporting directly to the Director of Marine Operations, this role involves overseeing vessel operations, supervising vendors, managing crew performance, handling inventory, and ensuring operational readiness and compliance.

The vessel operates on a seasonal basis from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with the possibility of an additional operational month before and/or after the standard season, depending on demand and weather conditions. During this period, the Lead Captain is compensated hourly for all duties performed.

Core responsibilities during the on-season include maintaining safe and smooth boat operations, overseeing repairs and routine maintenance, training and evaluating crew proficiency, managing onboard inventory, enforcing company protocols, and coordinating emergency responses. The Lead Captain also supports event execution and photoshoots, often adapting to last-minute changes and dynamic schedules.

When the vessel is out of the water and winterized, the Lead Captain transitions to the Vessel Manager role, providing continuity and oversight during the off-season months.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

(On Season) 1. Follow the guidelines outlined in section 1.02 of

BMO CREW OPERATIONS HANDBOOK

(PRINT) 2. Assist the fleet in troubleshooting screen, mechanical, or vessel issues throughout their assigned daily route or event. 3. Ensure crew members adhere to their designated duties, responsibilities, and expectations as set by the company. 4. Report any performance issues to management promptly. 5. Verify compliance with safety regulations. 6. Conduct regular checks and audits as scheduled. 7. Serve as the primary trainer for newly arrived crew members. 8. Oversee vessel operations to ensure smooth daily operations, safety compliance, and maintenance. 9. Supervise vendors to ensure timely and quality repairs onboard vessels, reporting findings to the marine operations coordinator. 10. Manage crew training and assess crew proficiency. 11. Coordinate inventory of spare parts onboard vessels in collaboration with Marine Management. 12. Implement approved policies, procedures, and company standards. 13. Coordinate with crew members to manage emergencies effectively and ensure proper escalation procedures are followed. 14. In summary, the Lead Captain plays a vital role in ensuring the efficiency, safety, and success of Ballyhoo Media’s marine operations. 15. Coordinate events as the lead coordinator to ensure client success on the day of the event.

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Possess the knowledge of the inter workings of the fleet vessels in your region.
  • Possess strong knowledge of both diesel and gas propulsion and electricity generation systems, and support systems such as fuel, pumps, and hydraulics.
  • Have a working knowledge and ability to troubleshoot, problem solve, and execute repairs as needed.
  • Extensive knowledge of shipboard and shoreside operations within the marine industry.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of regulatory and compliance maritime laws and regulations.
  • Ability to multitask, set priorities, and meet deadlines
  • Professional demeanor with all colleagues both corporate and Crew, and the occasional passenger.
  • Strong organizational skills with strategic vision and problem solving skills.
  • Strong leadership skills, combined with excellent communication skills
Qualifications:
  • 100GT OUPV License required
  • 2-5 years of Captain experience in the maritime industry with a proven track record of demonstrated successful results
  • Valid driver’s license with access to a vehicle
  • Possess or able to obtain a TWIC card

The environment includes a variety of vessels and spaces to include engine rooms and cabins. A high noise level is possible when entering machinery spaces. Personal protective equipment will be provided as needed in these situations. This position may travel domestically. Occasionally must get into awkward positions to reach cramped work spaces. Sometimes must work in very bright or very dim lighting conditions. Are occasionally exposed to hazardous equipment.
