Truck Driver IEnvironmental Services – Solid Waste

JOB SUMMARY

This position operates a truck along an assigned route to collect solid waste.

MAJOR DUTIES

Operates a truck along an assigned route to collect solid waste.

Unloads truck at landfill.

Conducts vehicle inspections to ensure safety and operability; performs minor maintenance and repairs.

Resolve customer service complaints.

Repairs and maintains carts.

Mows and trims grass and weeds.

Performs related duties.

SUPERVISORY

CONTROLSThe Solid Waste Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINESGuidelines include city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

WORKThe work consists of related vehicle operation and other duties. Inclement weather conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.

The purpose of this position is to collect solid waste. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of city solid waste management functions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK

ENVIRONMENTThe work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggle, or gloves.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

Must possess a current and valid Alabama Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL).
