This role involves the safe and timely operation of tractor-trailers or straight trucks for delivering food and food-related products across various routes. The position is essential for supporting the food distribution supply chain, ensuring customer products arrive as expected, and maintaining vehicle and cargo safety in accordance with all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
Communicating and interacting professionally with customers, vendors, and co-workers to ensure questions are answered accurately and promptly. Functioning as a team member within the department and organization as required, performing any duty assigned to best serve operational needs. Performing all required safety checks, including pre/post-trip inspections of the tractor/truck and trailer according to DOT regulations, and inspecting equipment to ensure it meets company safety standards, taking appropriate action as needed. Reporting all safety issues and required repairs immediately. Following all DOT regulations and company safe driving guidelines and policies, including immediately reporting all safety hazards. Inspecting trailers for properly loaded and secured freight. Performing count checks of items and verifying customer invoices for loaded products. Accurately and legibly completing all required paperwork associated with freight. Moving the tractor to the loading dock and attaching a preloaded trailer as needed. Driving to and delivering customer orders according to a predetermined route delivery schedule. Unloading products from the trailer and transporting items into designated customer storage areas. Performing damage control checks on items, scanning, and contacting a supervisor regarding order removal according to company policy. Verifying delivery of items with the customer and obtaining proper signatures. Collecting money (cash or checks) where required. Loading customer returns onto the trailer and securing trailer doors. Ensuring that the tractor, trailer, and freight are appropriately locked and/or secured at all times. Unloading damaged goods and customer returns, bringing them to the driver check-in, and completing necessary paperwork. Unloading all equipment, materials, and removing trash from trailers as required. Completing daily records of hours of service and entering them into logs in accordance with Federal DOT, state, and company requirements. Performing general housekeeping duties in the tractor, loading dock area, and keeping trailers clear and clean as required. Securing all equipment and completing all necessary paperwork at the end of the shift. Performing other related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
High school diploma/GED or state-approved equivalent. 12+ months of commercial driving experience. Valid CDL A license. Ability to meet all State licensing and/or certification requirements (where applicable). A clean Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) for the past 3 years. Ability to pass a post-offer drug test and criminal background check. Ability to pass a road test. Possession of a valid current DOT Health Card or ability to secure a new one. Ability to hand-lift and utilize a two-wheeler, lift gate, and/or other equipment to move and/or stack product cases/freight of varying size and weight throughout the shift; product generally ranges from between 10-35 pounds and up to between approximately 60 and 90 pounds, depending on the location.
