JOB SUMMARY/OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION
The primary responsibility of this position is the collection and transportation of commercial solid waste. Bulk container (“dumpster”) collection represents the main commercial solid waste service provided by the City. This is highly skilled work in the safe operation of large 66,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight solid waste front-loader collection vehicle. The employee is required to safely operate front loader collection vehicle in tight, confined locations as well as in the presence of other structures, vehicles, and pedestrians. The work is performed individually and independently by one person. The employee is responsible for planning and maintaining the route layout and schedule, service changes and completing equipment status reports. Operator perform daily and weekly equipment inspections, cleaning, lubrication, and other maintenance tasks.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
: Application of technical skills and diligence in the safe and efficient operation of a large (60,000 lbs and above) front-loader bulk-container collection truck. Operates other solid waste equipment as needed and as required on a temporary, trainee or emergency basis. Organizes schedules and updates collection routes as required. Notifies management of issues or concerns requiring attention. Identifies and reports repair needs of assigned vehicles and containers. Works a special shift to accommodate work-load demand, level of service or job efficiency. Investigates and answers complaints as directed by management through an established reporting system. Performs daily, weekly and other periodic equipment checks, and performs operator maintenance as appropriate. Work safely, diligently, and responsibly at completing assigned duties. Performs other duties that may be required at the discretion of the city.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge in the operation of compacting equipment and loaders. Knowledge of and/or ability to learn Post Environmental regulations and assist maintaining compliance for section. Skill in the safe operation and maintenance of machinery. Skill in the use and maintenance of hand tools. Ability to operate various mechanical equipment related to the job. Ability to motivate others. Ability to follow instructions and pay attention to detail. Ability to record data and maintain records. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to follow safety rules. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS LISTED AS FOLLOWS
PHYSICAL SKILLS:
Use of both hands with majority of fingers. 20/40 vision (in at least one eye), and be able to hear and understand and verbally communicate in English at normal conversational levels (corrective devices acceptable). Motor skill ability to operate equipment without excessive accommodation, climb, crawl, stoop, etc. Ability to lift and carry up to seventy (70) pounds.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma or GED Equivalency Certificate as issued by a State Board of Education.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS
Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License and be insurable by the City’s current insurance carrier. Possession of a valid Florida Driver License, class “B” and possession and maintenance of a driving record which meets or exceeds minimum City driving standards.
