Position Summary:

The Transportation Utility is responsible for ensuring the efficient and safe movement of trailers within the distribution center yard during weekend operations. This role also encompasses maintaining the cleanliness of our tractor and trailer fleet and performing basic repairs and maintenance on essential transportation equipment. The ideal candidate will be a reliable, detail-oriented individual with a strong work ethic and the ability to work independently.

Primary Responsibilities:
Yard Truck Operation:

Safely and efficiently operate yard trucks to move trailers to and from loading docks and designated yard parking areas.

Trailer Washing:

Thoroughly wash the exterior of tractors and trailers, ensuring a clean and professional appearance of the fleet. This includes safe use of appropriate cleaning solutions and equipment.

Basic Equipment Repair and Maintenance:

Perform basic repairs and preventative maintenance on transportation equipment, including but not limited to: Two-wheelers (hand trucks, pallet jacks) – lubricating wheels, tightening bolts, replacing minor parts. Load bars – inspecting for damage, performing minor adjustments or repairs.

Yard Organization and Safety:

Maintain a clean, organized, and safe yard environment. This includes ensuring clear pathways, proper trailer placement, and adherence to all safety regulations. During winter season this will require snow clearing from tractors and trailers.

Equipment Checks:

Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of yard trucks and other assigned equipment, reporting any defects or maintenance needs promptly.

Documentation:

Accurately complete any required logs or documentation related to trailer movements, equipment maintenance, and safety checks.

Other Duties:

Perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor to support the overall transportation operations.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent. Valid driver’s license. Proven experience operating yard trucks or similar heavy equipment is highly preferred. Ability to safely operate and maneuver large vehicles in a confined yard environment. Basic mechanical aptitude and experience with simple repairs and maintenance. Ability to follow instructions and work independently with minimal supervision. Strong attention to detail and a commitment to safety. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. Good communication skills. Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job, including standing, walking, lifting, bending, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
