SOLID WASTE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II 3.2 3.2

out of 5 stars Chapel Hill, NC 27514 Summary The purpose of this position is to operate a refuse truck to collect trash, yard waste, bulky items, deceased animals, and other special wastes along residential collection routes. This position is a back-up driver in the Solid Waste Services Division. This position will primarily be working as a collector on a rear loading refuse truck, lifting brush, bagged yard waste, bags of trash, and bulky items. This position is physically demanding and requires the ability to lift 50 pounds. You will be required to stoop, stand, lift, and work in hot and cold weather. The individual in this position will be expected to learn a collection route and be able to drive the route when the primary driver is absent. Over time, an employee in this position will progress to a primary driving role as the employee’s skills improve and positions become available. This classification has been designated as Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Essential Functions Note:

Operates a refuse truck and assists crew members with manually collects trash, bulky items, appliances, dead animals, and yard waste. Collects trash from residents that are unable to place waste to the curb. Collects trash from cans and bins; decides if waste materials should be collected to ensure compliance. Transports wastes to the landfill or transfer station for disposal; and unloads wastes at the landfill or transfer station. Ensures proper operation and maintenance of refuse trucks; conducts pre and post trip inspections. Performs equipment safety checks; completes inspection paperwork. Ensures trucks and truck parking areas are cleaned properly, and monitors gauges. Assists with special projects and storms; maintains clean grounds; collects debris after natural disasters. Provides customer service; makes collection decisions that determine level and quality of customer service. Speak with customers to verify proper collection. Explain items that do not comply with ordinances; and notifies office staff and supervisors when collection issues arise. Supervision Exercised None Physical Demands The work is typically performed while driving a vehicle, with intermittent, lifting, walking, standing or stooping. The employee uses equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. Must be able to lift minimum 50 pounds. The employee occasionally lifts heavy and very heavy objects. Work Environment The work is typically performed in a truck and outdoors, where the employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, foul odors, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, gloves, safety shoes, and reflective safety clothing. Minimum Qualifications Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the job.

Experience One year experience driving a vehicle that requires a Class B driver’s license and performing repetitive manual labor. Licenses/Certificates The possession of a valid class B driver’s license issued by the state of North Carolina.
