Job Description

Waste Management and Recycling Town of Gorham 20 Park Street, Gorham, NH 03581 The Town of Gorham Public Works Department is now accepting applications for a qualified Solid Waste/Recycling Laborer/Operator. The position is full-time, 40 hours per week. JOB SUMMARY

Performs routine, repetitive work of unskilled or semi-skilled tasks, requiring the ability to do heavy physical labor efficiently. May perform work of motor trucks and light equipment and the performance of related work as requires. CDL required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Except as specifically noted, the following functions are considered essential to this position. The listed examples may not include all duties found in the class. It is the responsibility of the to: Works with MSW/Recycling crew curbside, emptying refuse and recyclable containers and performs a variety of other heavy manual work in connection with curbside collection of solid waste/recyclables and must be able to lift approximately 70 lbs. Operates manual controls on the back of packer truck and performs other activities in connection with the transportation of solid waste/recyclables.

  • Ability to perform strenuous physical work under varying and adverse weather conditions.
  • Maintain cleanliness of MSW/Recycling vehicles, inside and outside, along with other crew members.
  • Occasionally assists in plowing snow, salting and sanding operations, or other activities to mitigate conditions caused by extreme weather conditions.
  • Makes minor repairs and reports needed for major repairs to supervisor and/or mechanic.
  • Familiar with and executes safe work procedures associated with assigned work.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Operate light vehicular equipment and occasionally operated heavy equipment. Availability 24 hours per day to meet emergency situations.
  • Performs related work as required/requested.

SUMMARY OF OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES

Extended periods of exposure to sunlight, wind, snow, rain and extreme temperatures. Exposure to fuels, lubricants, solvents and fluids. May be exposed to solid waste components, herbicides, pesticides, paints, solvents, hydraulic fluids, and fertilizer. May be exposed to long periods of sunlight and unfavorable climatic conditions May be exposed to poison ivy, oak or sumac, and insects such as wasps, hornets, bees, etc.

OTHER TRAINING, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

One (1) year experience in the operation and maintenance of trucks, construction and maintenance equipment. Occasional operation of backhoe, front-end loader. Operation of heavy trucks (generally with plow, wing and spreader), etc. Effective communication skills. Ability to write reports, material lists, etc. Any equivalent combination of education and experience, which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skill and availability.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

: Valid NH CDL-A or B driver’s license. High School diploma or G.E.D. Any equivalent combination of education and experience, which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skill and availability.
