Rail Yard – Side Load Operator 3.1 3.1 out of 5 stars 4350 Goer Dr, North Charleston, SC 29406 Job Summary We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Side Load Operators to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the safe and efficient movement of trailers within the intermodal rail terminal. Responsible for the safe and efficient loading and unloading of rail cars. They ensure the accurate and timely transport of goods, work in compliance with safety regulations, and maintain accurate records of loaded and unloaded items. In addition, this position is responsble for directing crane operators in moving cargo containers and prepares railcars for loading and unloading. This role requires a strong understanding of heavy equipment operation and a commitment to maintaining safety standards in compliance with OSHA regulations. Employees will train at the entry-level Ground position directing crane operators who are loading and unloading cargo containers from railcars. The ground person is also responsible for preparing railcars for loading and unloading by removing and installing IBC locks. Once training is complete the employee will begin training in the equipment which includes a variety of operating and driving tasks, including hauling containers from the rail track to other areas of the intermodal yard for outside driver pickup, moving chassis, and moving containers about the intermodal yard in a safe and efficient manner. Duties Operate yard equipment to move trailers in and out of loading docks. Load and unload freight using forklifts, side loaders, and order equipment as necessary. Ensure that all equipment is operated safely and efficiently, adhering to company policies and OSHA guidelines. Conduct routine inspections of vehicles and equipment to ensure proper functioning. Maintain a clean and organized rail yard area, ensuring that all materials are stored properly. Assist with heavy lifting tasks as needed, ensuring that safety protocols are followed at all times. Collaborate with rail road staff to ensure timely loading and unloading of goods. Must have open availability to work any needed shift and weekends.

Schedules:

5AM to 2PM 2PM to 10PM Requirements Proven experience in heavy equipment operation, particularly with forklifts and side loader. Familiarity with railroad operations and intermodal transportation environment. Ability to perform heavy lifting tasks as required by the job. Strong mechanical knowledge to troubleshoot minor equipment issues. Understanding of safety regulations, including OSHA standards related to intermodal transportation operations. Excellent communication skills and ability to work well in a team-oriented environment. Prior experience in a similar role is preferred but not mandatory.

Qualifications and Skills:

18 years of age or older High school diploma or equivalent. Valid driver’s license. Previous experience as a hostler driver or equipment operator in a similar role within the intermodal rail transportation industry is preferred. Strong knowledge of safety regulations and best practices related to equipment operators. Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently in various weather conditions and tight spaces. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to follow instructions and work independently with minimal supervision. Physical stamina and ability to work in a physically demanding environment.
