Broughton Hospital is currently recruiting for a Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) for an anticipated vacancy. The CNO has 24-hour responsibility for adequate nursing coverage and quality nursing care within existing resources in the Nursing Services department. This position is responsible for the delivery of quality nursing care which envelops optimal patient and staff safety; the daily operation of the Nursing Department in order to effectively meet the needs of patients and the hospital; and adherence to standards of accrediting agencies such as The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Division of Health Service Regulation (DHSR), and the Division. This position assures the efficient and effective use of resources, including optimal recruitment and retention of staff. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited: Developing, prioritizing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating departmental goals.
Ensuring quality in the delivery of nursing care by regularly monitoring, analyzing, and evaluating data from audits, unit rounds, employee and patient incident reports, medication variance reports, and complaints and inquiries from patients and families.
Providing leadership for special projects/programs as delegated. Coordinating with other clinical departments (Medical staff, Social Work, Psychology, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Nutritional Services, etc.) to assure appropriate patient care.
Ensuring that effective review of incidents, identified problems, and complaints occur and subsequently works collaboratively to problem solve and produce systematic improvements in patient care.
Collaborating with and sharing best practices with other DSOHF and DHHS facilities and entities.
Establishing and maintaining proper unit-level information systems to ensure that clinical information is readily available to Nursing staff and other Treatment Team members.
Providing accurate and appropriate performance evaluations of supervised employees and identifies areas of improvement by using the current performance management evaluation system to encourage improved performance.
Routinely carries out functions within the Patient Safety Evaluation System (PSES) which may include but is not limited to review and analysis of events, maintaining patient safety work product (PSWP) within a secure environment, and providing patient safety event information designated as patient safety event to designated quality and risk management personnel for the Patient Safety Organization (PSO).
Establishing and maintaining methods for effective and efficient recruitment while also improving retention.
Providing for appropriate unit-based staffing plans while balancing the need to provide minimum safe coverage and the need to equalize staff workloads across the hospital, shifts, units, and service areas.
Collaborating to provide ongoing educational activities for staff while assuring that such activities meet identified needs, including required competencies and other regulatory and hospital requirements.
Establishing and maintaining the Nursing Department policymaking and committee structure to assure appropriate patient care, which includes designing systems to improve patient care.
Ensuring effectiveness of the hospital’s Therapeutic Response Team (TRT) and supervising the TRT Nurse Supervisor. Build and maintain a nursing workforce proficient in using Epic. Serving on various committees including Executive Leadership Team (ELT) and Departmental Leadership Team (DLT).
Rotating as an Administrator On Call to handle after-hour issues. The normal schedule for this position is Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm; however, flexibility is required as this individual will serve as an Administrator On Call and may have to adjust their schedule to meet the needs of the hospital. This position is designated Mandatory and must report or stay over during adverse weather events.
