This position is responsible for equine patient handling, preparing and maintaining treatment areas, assisting with diagnostic and surgical procedures, maintaining accurate records, supporting billing processes, and performing general clinic and field support tasks. The Veterinary Assistant is expected to comply with all regulatory requirements, uphold clinic safety protocols, and demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and compassion in all duties. Duties and Responsibilities Assist veterinarians in the examination, treatment, and handling of equine patients using proper restraint techniques and safety measures. Prepare treatment areas, equipment, medications, and instruments for examinations, procedures, and surgeries. Perform basic laboratory tests, accurately document results, and communicate findings to veterinarians. Assist with diagnostic imaging and therapeutic procedures. Track procedures and medications used; support accurate billing and inventory control. Complete medical record entries and billing in the practice management system (HVMS). Collect, organize, and restock equipment and supplies for clinic and field appointments. Assist with patient transport, including loading/unloading horses and driving to appointments as needed. Maintain cleanliness of clinical and surgical areas, stalls, equipment, and drains; prepare surgical packs and perform sterilization. Complete post-treatment and post-surgical cleaning and restocking protocols. Comply with all controlled substances handling procedures and state/federal regulations. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED equivalent required. Demonstrated prior experience handling and restraining horses; knowledge of basic horse husbandry required. Eligibility to obtain and maintain a California Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substances Permit (VACSP). Must pass a background check and maintain a clean motor vehicle record. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn practice management software (HVMS). Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to multitask effectively. Effective interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Work performed in both clinical and field environments; exposure to horses, outdoor conditions, and zoonotic diseases. Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs. Frequent standing, bending, lifting, and handling of large animals required. Work schedule may include weekends, evenings, and on-call rotations. Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when applicable.

Compliance with Cal/OSHA safety standards required.
