Although college campuses are more diverse than ever before, high school minority students continue to face many hurdles when continuing their education. One such obstacle includes figuring out how to pay for the rising cost of college tuition and associated fees.

How Do Scholarships Work?

When to Apply for Scholarships

African American Scholarships

Amount: $5,000 renewable scholarships 

Eligibility: Must be a black high school senior with plans to pursue a career in technology. Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher and have demonstrated leadership in the community.

Amount: Up to $3,000

Eligibility: This is a needs-based scholarship available to African American students who plan to attend an HBCU (historically black colleges and universities). Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA and major in one of the disciplines specified by the application.

Amount: $5,000

Eligibility: Must be an outstanding student planning to attend a publicly supported HBCU or Predominantly Black Institution (PBIs).

Amount: $15,000 and includes a 12-week summer internship and mentorship

Eligibility: Must be an outstanding student attending an HBCU who is working towards a degree in an undergraduate, Master’s, Law, or PhD program.

Amount: Up to $30,000 over four years

Eligibility: This is a needs-based scholarship awarded to minority high school seniors who have leadership potential and demonstrated community service. Must have a minimum SAT score of 1,000 combined on the math and reading sections or a composite ACT score of 21.

Hispanic Scholarships 

Amount: $500 to $5,000

Eligibility: Must be Hispanic and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. 

Amount: $5,000

Eligibility: Must be an outstanding undergraduate Latino student with an interest in the media and entertainment industry.

Asian American, Native American, and Pacific Islander Scholarships 

Amount: $2,000 to $3,000 

Eligibility: Must be an incoming freshman; be of Asian and/or Pacific Islander ethnicity; minimum GPA of 2.80; show demonstrated financial need; be a California resident.

Amount: $4,000

Eligibility: Be a full-time undergraduate student pursuing a degree in the actuarial profession; have at least one birth parent who is a Black, Hispanic, Native North American, or Pacific Islander; have a 3.0 GPA; have a minimum ACT math score of 28 or SAT math score of 620.

Amount: Varies by scholarship

Eligibility: Must be enrolled with his or her respective tribe; have a minimum GPA of 2.5; must be pursuing an associate’s degree or higher at an accredited institution. 

Amount: Varies

Eligibility: Be an African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American with a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3; must have plans to enroll full-time in a four-year degree program.

Amount: Up to $90,000 over the course of two years

Eligibility: Created for immigrants and children of immigrants. The applicant must be a New American who is 30 years or younger and who is planning to continue an eligible graduate degree program in the United States. 

College Scholarships for Women

Amount: Up to $5,000

Eligibility: Be a female undergraduate enrolled at a United Negro College Fund (UNCF) school who is majoring in STEM. Must have a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Amount: $1,500, including one full year of mentorship and WIIT membership

Eligibility: Applicants must identify as female; be enrolled in an accredited institution; show a demonstrated interest in international trade.

Amount: $2,500

Eligibility: Must be a female of Asian ancestry; have a minimum 3.0 GPA; be enrolled full-time at an accredited, four-year institution.
